Baby Tummy Sleeping

help! My baby is a pro roller now. She can go front to back and back to front with little effort. All of a sudden she only wants to sleep on her belly. I have tried to flip her, but she goes right back. I feel the need to constantly check on her because I am so nervous!

My son does this too, he sleeps on his back for a short while then he flips over to his tummy. I've always been told that if baby is strong enough to roll over and hold their head up, it's fine if they roll over onto their tummies to sleep. I always put him down on his back and if he chooses to roll over to his tummy I'm not waking him to adjust him. They have enough head control If they are rolling to readjust themselves as necessary

edit: and it's gonna be impossible to force them to sleep on their back if they don't want to

  • I've been told by my paediatrician that if they can roll back and forth well and they put themselves in that position then it's fine. Babies have preferences for sleeping just like adults do. I'm a stomach sleeper, DH is a side sleeper, and DS seems to be a back sleeper. He has no interest in being on his tummy at the moment. If your LO is a pro roller, don't stress out! You just have yourself a stomach sleeper :)
  • Same as above. I stressed too because LO learned back to tummy right before 3 months but can't roll the other way yet. She is all about rolling when we put her down for sleep and often settles down to sleep and stays asleep on her tummy. Pediatrician said same thing when I called because she was not 4 months yet when the largest SIDS risk is seen before 4 months, I was so paranoid. She said the same about strength and coordination to get on their tummy means they can sense if breathing is in trouble and can maneuver accordingly.
  • Baby boy can only roll back to front, and sleeps the first 1/3 of the night on his back, second 1/3 on his side and finishes the night on his tummy. He's strong enough to move his head to not smother himself and if he wants off his belly he lets us know! As pp's have said, once they are strong enough to roll they are strong enough to adjust themselves in the night. Mama's need sleep too so try not to stress!
  • My LO has been sleeping in her crib for about 5 days. I'm super paranoid about it. She is a full time rolling, going both directions. She likes to sleep on her tummy every night, and I have read about what everyone else is saying that since she roll both directions and has amazing head and back control then she will be fine, but she likes to sleep with her face down, not to side when she sleeps on her tummy. Attempts to turn her head but sometimes she just goes back. I has a very sensitive motion monitor that seems to be working great. Any advice or reassurance that she will be fine?? Waiting to hear back from ped.

@Apthor02 I have no advice. I'm in the same boat. She is always face down. Let me know what your ped says. She seems okay and I know she can turn if she needs to. Her head is sort of turned here, but she is usually completely faced down!

This is exactly how my boy does. His face is usually a little more down into the mattress. I've watched him enough to know he can adjust his head..so i've had to stop worrying!

  • My son had slept on his tummy sense he was a new born. That's the only way he would ever sleep peacefully. As long as they have good control with their neck they should be fine!

Aw your little belly sleepers are adorable! Mine still hasn't rolled from back to belly my ped didn't seem concerned so I guess it's normal? He rolls belly to back but this little guy has no interest in being on his belly haha
  • @kaym6 my son is the exact same way! He will just lay on his back and does not seam interested in trying to roll over, but as soon as I lay him on his tummy he rolls over to his back. Stubborn baby.
  • Here I am thinking I would love to see my LO try this! She's still not really even interested in rolling over. I'm sure as soon as she's doing it, I'll regret saying this lol.

My LO rolled over belly to back twice in one night a few weeks ago and has no interest in doing it again. She did it so nonchalantly too.

Haha. Thanks basically my daughter - she's done it a few times, but just isn't interested right now. It'll come soon I'm sure!
  • LO has been rolling over pretty solidly for several days. As soon as I put her down, she rolls to her side or belly. This would be fine, if she would be happy there, or just roll herself over, but she's been calling out for me to come save her! Last night, she seemed to realize that sleeping on her tummy was more comfortable for her AR, and slept THROUGH THE NIGHT. Amen. Hallelujah. Sleep on your belly all you want, kiddo. I know you can get back over.
