Trouble TTC

Question for anyone who has had success with Clomid.

So for starters Clomid has been renamed "f@($/&,8g clomid" in my house because saying clomid makes me a mean emotional roller coaster is an understatement.

The first month I was on 50mg taken on day 3. 24 day blood draw showed that I didn't ovulate.

2nd month I was on 100mg had to take on day 5 because my pharmacy is evil.
24 day blood draw had a lower level of whatever they test for then it did the previous month so definitely didn't ovulate.

This month I'm back on 50mg starting on day 3 (tomorrow) and I'm determined to have good results this time.

I've always taken it at night because I read it was easier to deal with the side effects. Does the time that I take it matter? Should I try taking it during the day? Or is it like BCP where you have to take it at the same time every day in order for it to work?

Re: Question for anyone who has had success with Clomid.

  • Are you taking this under the care of an RE or an OB?  I think you will see a lot of advice here not to take it if you are not being monitored with ultrasounds and bloodwork to see how you respond.  Clomid can have certain side effects that will be long term, like lining thinning, and you want to make sure you are not experiencing them.  Did your doctor tell you to take it because you don't ovulate on your own, or another reason?

I have taken it at night each of the 5 cycles I've used it, cannot remember if that was what my RE suggested or not.  I get a variety of side effects--shoulder/back pain, headaches, anxiety--but nothing that has prevented me from continuing with the treatment...but I respond well to Clomid (multiple follicles, etc.).  If you are not responding well, I would encourage you to talk to your doctor.  You don't need to endure the side effects cycle after cycle for nothing.  Clomid does not work for everyone, and there should be alternatives you can try.

  • I don't ovulate or get my period on my own. And fertility problems run in my family and my fiancé and I told the doctor we wanted a lot of kids (his idea of a lot is 7 I said 3) but my mom went through menopause at 27 my aunt at 32 I'm 24 so doctor is starting with clomid because if it works there's an increased chance of multiple but it hasn't worked so far. I'm seeing an ob right now because she wants to wait a few months and get an idea of how much help I need to get pregnant before sending me to an re I am being monitored though for long term side effects like my lining thinning so far no problems
  • I've taken it at night to minimize side effects at the suggestion of my RE but not necessarily at the same time. It's worked to produce mature follies but I've always used a trigger injection to induce ovulation. It might be worth it to see a specialist earlier than later for those types of extra support that your OB may not be knowledgable about (trigger injection, estrogen or progesterone) especially since you are limited to how many times you can use clomid.

  • How many times can you use clomid?
  • Some doctors adhere to 6 as a lifetime max.  My RE was saying that the link to ovarian cancer has been disproven--I don't know if that means he would recommend I do more than 6 (we haven't gotten that far), though.

  • My understanding is you can take it whenever you want. I always took Tylenol pm with it at bedtime because I have chronic headaches. I didn't notice at side effects.

this is was my first cycle on Clomid.. my RE started me off at 100mg instead of the normal 50mg.... i produced 3 follicles this cycle.

My RE suggested taking the Clomid at night bc he said the side effects are easier to deal with..... but i assume you can take them at whatever part of the day is easiest for you... not sure if you will see difference depending on when during the day you take them.... i can't think of any reason why that would change the outcome.... i'm curious why your OB is lowering your dose if you did not successfully ovulate at 100mg.

Progesterone levels is normally what my RE checks to confirm ovulation.

    Goodluck!
