Staying Hydrated

This is an odd one...water is pretty aversive to me right now. How is everyone staying hydrated? (Especially those of you who are constantly nauseous)

Re: Staying Hydrated

  • Do you think your stomach could take fruits with a high water content like grapes and watermelon?

Have you tried La Croix sparkling water? I like it because it doesn't have a bunch of sugar added and stuff, but kind of changes up your regular water when you start to get sick of it. I like the grapefruit and lemon-lime. You could also try coconut water. I'm not a huge fan, but a lot of people love it and it's great for hydration.

  • I just bought this water bottle that holds 62.5oz, and I put fresh fruit in the bottom of it then fill with water. The slight taste of the fruit makes the water tasty. I was struggling with drinking enough water too.
  • Definitely watermelon. Also tons of ice cold Gatorade and lemon popsicles. Although hydration is still a daily battle for me.
  • I could definitely get behind the watermelon idea! Thanks everyone! I'll experiment with the other drinks too. Traditionally, I don't like coconut water or sparkling water, but you never know with weird pregnancy tastes.
  • I put different kinds of fruit in my water. Lemon helps me curb my nausea. I also like to do strawberries and raspberries. Sometimes I'll add a mint leaf too. It's a game changer for me! Even drinks like Gatorade and such aren't great for hydration because they are high in sodium and sugars which can make you retain water. Those drinks are only good if you are doing something active where you sweat. Good luck!

  • Along the same line as ginger ale, but way less sugar: ginger tea.
  • Oh I guess I should've added- the sugary stuff is particularly good if your ms is a little more intense, I need all the calories I can get, and if you're not eating then you're not getting sodium which is essential for actually absorbing the water
  • Ginger ale, peppermint tea, Gatorade, Popsicles, sorbet or Italian ice, soooo much watermelon (I pretty much eat carbs and watermelon and bananas right now, that's it)
    Mmmmmm, watermelon

  • I'm bad about drinking enough water daily. I've been eating lots of fruit with high water content. Also mixing half water and half lemonade has been my go-to drink lately.

  • Do you have a juicer? You can make some fruit or vegetable juices, which will still be getting you LOTS of nutrients. To get extra water, after making the juice, thin it out with water. The water won't be as noticeable and the juice will get you further. If you need some good juice recipes, Pinterest, or check out the recipe for "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead." he's got a lot of good ones. I love carrot apple juice, apple/cucumber/kale/carrot/lemon/ginger juice, and anything with fruit, especially grapefruit strawberry.

I'm fortunate -- for now I've been guzzling water... so thirsty!

  • @LastMango great idea! Straight juices are too sugary for me. I'll add water.
  • @sweetyjenj I don't :(. But I can make some smoothies. I know I won't get the same experience but it should work
  • @mjolk that was me until 6 weeks. I was a drinking and peeing machine.

  • @Lecool I am a La Croix fav over here as well! I always buy the big pack from Costco and stock up my fridge.

Beside the delicious La Croix, I've been trying to really up my water intake. I usually stop and get an unsweetened green tea on my way into work and try to refill that cup 3-4 times per day. I order the incredibly large 30oz cup from Starbucks.

  • Sparkling water with fresh chunks of ginger and a few squeezes of lemon juice helped through the first few weeks. Now, I must have cold water (typically, I'm a room temp gal) and ice cold apple juice.

@TinaBelcher My M/S is probably NOWHERE near as bad as yours but yeah, you're totally right about the sodium! OH lectured me about that a few days where I was having M/S in combo with food poisoning. I dunno if you've tried it, but apparently you can get unflavored sugar-free electrolyte mix over-the-counter at some pharmacies--it's like a powdered mix. I found it gross at room temperature but ice cold, it wasn't the worst thing in the world and was really good for not having to worry about having a sugar crash later on. Not great for adding calories though :)
  • Ugh I'm having a hard time with this too! Orange slices in water had been helping,  and ice. Cold drinks are the only kind I can handle right now.
  • Last pregnancy, I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum and couldn't drink straight water because it tasted like green aquarium sludge.  I could only stomach ice cold water if I flavored it with fresh squeezed orange juice with a splash of cranberry juice (the kind that has no sugar and is usually used in cooking).

Ive been okay so far this pregnancy though but it's still early.

  • @canavara yes! My travel doc stocked me up on that pre-Tanzania trip, def not the tastiest  :p but a healthier alternative to Gatorade or pedialyte, for sure!
  • My doctor said ice chips or Popsicles. I can't get enough popsicles!

I've been doing small sips of water and it's room temp or warmer. Ice water is too irritating and ends up coming back up. I drink ginger ale a couple times a day and it's nice to have something with calories. In the evenings, hot water with lemon.
