Baby has become a bad napper :(

Our LO is now 7 weeks old. He's consistently woken every 2 hours (sometimes every hour and a half or so) since he was born except for one blissful week where we got some 3 and 4 hour stretches. During the day he would consistently take 2-3 hour naps. These were also my nap time since our night time sleep was so crappy.

Well over the last 3-4 days LO has been waking every 2 hours nearly on the dot at night and will only nap maybe 20-30min during the day. If I let him sleep on my chest on his tummy he will sleep for 1 1/2 hours or so but I can't get anything done letting him do this. He's been more fussy and I'm sure he's overtired as he's probably only getting around 12ish hours of sleep per day which is definitely less than the 16-18 per day our pediatrician said he should be getting :(

Anyone dealt with this issue or have any tips? The RnP seems to have lost its magical unicorn powers and I'm at a loss at what to try.

  • I'm sorry. Have you tried a bassinet/crib? DD1 outgrew the RnP at about that age. She apparently longer needed the tight snuggle and wanted to move around. Good luck!

  • I'm experiencing the same thing at 4 weeks! I don't have any advice though!  :(

He'll lay in his crib quietly for about 30 min but absolutely will not sleep in it. I've tried putting him in it sleepy and also already asleep. As soon as he hits the mattress his eyes pop open :(
  • My go to sleep book is The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems. I've been able to "nap train" my kids at 2mos. It takes a couple days of patience, but then I'm able to put them down for a nap while awake without any fussing.

I'm having somewhat of a similar problem. I posted about it a few days ago in the overstimulated baby thread.

Fortunately, we're still getting 3-4 hour stretches at night but the daytime is total crap. I've been searching for an answer and haven't found one yet.

I'm hoping it's a wonder week that's just dragging on.
  • I wear C on my chest with my moby during days like this.

I'm definitely not one to dole out advice on any kind of napping since I'm just trying out different things. Sure fire ways i can get LO to nap are in the Moby and in the stroller but I'd really like him to nap in his crib. I think consistency and a lot of patience is key. When LO shows me his tired cues, I retreat into the bedroom, pull down the shades, put the white noise on and cuddle him. When drowsy, I put him in his crib. And then I wait...sometimes longer than I want to. At first he would start fussing right away but gradually he's been able to stay in and sleep. Sometimes they're catnaps but I've also had success with 1-2 hour naps. Exhausting but I'll wait and see how this works out for me.

  • My LO has been fightimg his naps for the past week and not sleeping as long. I have started letting him nap on his tummy (on our couch which is flat and firm). I sit right next to him while he sleeps to make sure keeps his head to one side and is able to breathe. He will nap for hours in this position.  Its also a go to now when he is fussing from being over tired because he cant thrash his arms and legs around, keeping him from falling asleep/staying asleep. Since your LO likes sleeping on you, I bet he will sleep well on his tummy. Just make sure to keep an eye on him. Good luck!

I do wear him during the day but I'd like to get him to nap without being held constantly if possible =/ he also doesn't nap as well when my husband holds him. He definitely settles better with me and it's exhausting being the only thing that calms him down.

Have you checked out The Wonder Weeks? There is an app for it on iPhone/Pad. He might be going through a "developmental leap" which can cause more fussiness. It's definitely not 100% accurate for every kid, I'm sure, but my LOs tended to follow it relatively closely. Either way, this is just a phase and he will change before you know it! Hang in there mama and do what you have to do

  • Yep we've been keeping up with Wonder Weeks. I'm just going to assume he's going through a leap and that this too shall pass.
