Anyone Facetime/Skyping the birth?!

Hey everyone!

Curious if any of you mommas are planning on skype or face timing with your significant other during your littles birth!

My husband will be gone so I am planning it all out now and as it gets closer starting to freak out about tiny logistical things- like what device?! Computer, iPad, phone?! Lol sounds silly but I'm getting really worried about it!

Has anyone done this in the past or planning on it?? Any insight appreciated!

Re: Anyone Facetime/Skyping the birth?!

  • I think face timing so your SO can be a part of it is a wonderful idea. Maybe keep it easy and use a phone so a birth assistant or family member can help you? Also, check with your hospital. Some have a policy about not filming the actual birth, not sure about face timing. Sorry he won't be there and hope you are able to share it!!!

  • I plan to check with the hospital once we get there about skyping my sister in China. She was present for my DD2's birth and she took alot of great pictures through the experience. So I want her to be a part of this time too.

  • @DSTtots4lyfe I am thinking the same thing about the phone to make it simple, but then at the same time I thought maybe I want to see him on a bigger screen. As much as I don't want him to miss anything I think I will be equally wanting to see him and have his support!

The hospital luckily said it was fine. It's Germany so I am finding they have few rules surrounding the birth luckily :)

@cjackrunfast78 Are you planning on just using a phone? Great idea to Skype her in!!
  • @aliciayarrish yes. We will be using our cell phone.
  • @laurenm2123  Haha, guess I should have specified on the title ;) But yes, SO not friends- is that a thing?! Because I can't even think of doing that ha
  • So relieved to see that this post is about you face timing your SO and not friends and family. I didn't know what to expect opening this thread!
I was thinking the same thing. I like to make opinions on the title of the threads, and I was thinking 'Hell No'. But then when she said it was her SO, oh that's ok and makes sense.

  • There is a possibility my husband won't be there for the birth and if he isn't I may try to Skype with him in my phone. I'm not sure it's going to all work though so nothing is set in stone. He will be on the ocean and have terrible reception.

  • The only thing that came up as a logistical concern regarding this is that cell coverage may not be great in the particular location you end up - my husband had a  hard time connecting with our babysitter via phone while we were in triage. So if your hospital has good wifi, I would opt for a device that can be set up on the wifi network, which should be more reliable. The last thing you want is your support Skype session dropping out constantly.

Ditto this. Our hospital has godawful cell reception but pretty decent wifi.

  • @BlueJuice @MynaBird I'm actually worried about the reception! I have to buy wifi cards at the hospital and plan on using those otherwise it would be sooo much data to FaceTime for hours. You'd think since it's the hospital selling the cards it would be good internet, but we shall see =\

Going to do a test run with buying a wifi card and calling someone at my next appointment! (If I make it to my next appt ;) )
