Physical Activity?

My appointment with my doctor is not for another five weeks, so I am at a loss here.

We have always been pretty active. I am not worried about overdoing it at the gym or biking or stuff like that. I am worried about overdoing it hiking.

We are doing a 24 mile hike tomorrow and I am a little concerned. My heartrate is up and it doesn't take much for me to feel it now. We are obviously doing a lengthy hike at a fast pace. DH is going to get frustrated if I slow the pace down, but IDK. I want to. I don't want to overdo it.

Anyone have any tips for knowing when you have hit your limits. I don't want to be constantly checking my heartrate. I also don't want to die out there.

If you normally do hikes that long, you should be fine. If you don't, don't start now. Pretty much any activity your body is already accustomed to is permitted (of course there are exceptions) but docs generally advise against starting anything new, with the exception of light exercise if you didn't previously to getting pregnant.

  • @MrsRahl, it is something we typically do a lot if, length wise. It is our first big one of the season though. We are active otherwise, but I just feel myself getting winded easier.
  • I asked my physical therapist a similar question the other day.  He said, for me, that I can keep my routine up and that typically prego's don't need to reevaluate their routine until the 3rd trimester.  I recommend talking to your doctor about this though because this can be different for everyone depending on their individual circumstances.

  • @Wholesome, thank you. That seems like a good and simple way to view it.
  • I think the general rule of thumb is that your heart rate is alright if you are able to talk without too much struggle during your activity.

  • I had an appointment with me OB at 6 weeks and she recommended I pass even on the treadmill for the next few weeks.  Only short light walks for exercise  were recommended but I'm not very active to begin with other then the gym 3 times a week.

  • SunsetSky I plan on continuing backpacking this year, despite knowing that I might slow down the group occasionally. So far I've been very active during my pregnancy (7wks, 4 days), and I actually feel better when I'm doing something I love. I've snowboarded, trail ran, and gone surfing all since my BFP and it feels great to continue these activities with just a bit of caution. You have to listen to your intuition and do what feels right for you!

I'm pretty active, and do CrossFit as my main exercise. I was told that I don't have to change too much yet. But that I do need to make sure that I'm still able to talk while working out (so, not working out until I'm out of breath/exhausted). My coach told me another trick to is make sure you are still have enough breath to be able to whistle. And definetely make sure that you stay hydrated!

  • I still do all of my at home workouts and run about 3 miles a week and plan to continue doing so throughout my pregnancy. I really regret not exercising during my previous pregnancy so I'm determined to stay active this time around.
  • Thank you ladies so much for all of the reassurance. We went ahead with the hike. I was really worried, but I did fine. My heartrate never got near it's peak. My ankles swelled a bit, but I imagine it was from the trail itself... there was six miles or so of switchbacks through rockslides. We slowed it down a bit toward the end, but still made it out before dark, so I'm happy with how it turned out.

It is so good to see other women can be active throughout pregnancy.

I started spotting a little this morning.  The doctor said it may have been from working out too hard.  Be careful ladies!  I'm stepping it down a few notches to just moving and not my usual "it's not a good workout until I'm dripping in sweat".

I did a medicine ball workout, which includes a lot of abs,  and then went for a 3 mile walk. I'm spotting a little now. I think maybe it's only a one or the other thing, no more multiple in a row. It wasn't intense, but it was three or so hours straight....
  • I was just restarting my Couch to 5K because I didn't like how slow my jog was getting and wanted to start from the beginning and push myself more.  I wasn't planning to add more workouts for a couple more weeks or so but I'm seriously thinking of calling casual strolls my exercise now.

So, I was planning on getting back in the gym this week. But my spotting caused my doctor to put me on pelvic rest, which means brisk walks are the best I can do. Make sure to talk to your doctor anytime you spot.
