Depression help

Has anyone ever seeked help for depression issues? I see people go to rehab or counseling but I honestly can't afford to spend the time or money on that. Even though I really should. I have seen the group on here for support but it not used very often. Are there other apps or message boards for this kinda stuff?

Re: Depression help

  • Hi! I have lots of experience both going through it and helping others.

What kind of support do you need?

  • I used to see a psychologist who was awesome.  She took patients from around the world and did phone appointments.  Her services were covered by my insurance, about 80%.  I can give you her number if you'd like.

  • I spoke to psych doctor at my regular doctors office and she only charged me my co-pay. You can ask your general doctor for medication. I highly recommend lexapro. I've used it as I've needed it since I was 12, I'm 25 now

Check your insurance because I think a lot if that is covered now days. I know our insurance covers a therapist for mental health.

It's really important for your well being and that of your baby that you get help for depression. My dad is bipolar and when he wasn't getting help or went off his meds, it threw the whole family into chaos. And trust me: you don't want that for your kids. I remember every time he tried to commit suicide, all the times he was too depressed to do anything but lay on the couch all day, how my childhood and my brother's became all about my dad's illness. He wasn't able to be a dad to us when he wasn't getting help.

There's nothing wrong with having a mental illness, things go wrong with our brains the same way they go wrong with any other organ. If you had a kidney infection of broke your leg, you would go to the Dr. Depression isn't any different.
  • I can't say enough good things about therapy.  And there's a good chance that a provider will help you figure out a way to make it work financially.  People go into that profession because they want to make a difference, and they will help you.

  • Thank you everyone. I totally understand I have bipolar in my family too and grew up watching and riding the same roller coaster. I'm terrified that I'm on the same tracks now though. I was hoping to find a chat room or community like this one where you can post stuff. Something to do while I figure out money situation to go to counseling
  • @rachellegiacco I know there forums for sure. I used to go on those a lot when I was younger. Just google "depression community board/forum" and you should find something. Be sure it's a board that's legit though and is well monitored bc the last thing you need is lurkers putting you down when you're already down.

I'm sorry you're not feeling well. Best wishes to you.

  • How are you doing, @rachellegiacco ?  Sending positive thoughts your way.
