Lower back pain suggestions?

I have SI (sacroiliac) joint dysfunction, diagnosed serval years ago. So far this pregnancy it hasn't been bad. I'm 36+4 today and suddenly today I can hardly walk. It feels like my right si joint is unhinged and I can't put weight in that leg alone. Standing on both feet is OK, but walking is a nightmare. I'm a teacher and this upcoming week is finals, so I need to be able to walk (and thank goodness it's the last week of school!). I have a support belt, but forgot it at work on Friday. I plan to wear it tomorrow but I'm afraid that won't be enough. I'm seeing my dr tomorrow afternoon and plan ask her for suggestions then, too. Any of you lovely mamas have any suggestions for how to deal with the pain?

I would go see a chiropractor! Maybe you could roll your way around your classroom in your chair?

  • Definitely going to go see chiro if I can't get better. Sadly, my classroom is a 3 tiered computer lab... so there are steps up I have to navigate as well. Yikes!
  • Chiro, warm bath, heading pad on low, using a ball for sitting in the evening, having your partner apply sacral pressure.

Thanks @DSTtots4lyfe for the tips! I plan to try those all out tonight and call the chiro tomorrow. DH drove me to work and helped me waddle in to rescue my support belt. I'm able to shuffle through the house at a turtle's pace now, definitely an improvement from before though but still in pain.
  • I lay on my back for a moment with my legs bent at the knee and pulled a bit toward my chest. Then I rock side-to-side for a few minutes. It's helps me a lot. OB said this was ok, even though I'm on my back because of the rocking side-to-side motion.
  • I just have the typical 3rd trimester back pain but sitting on a large yoga ball really helps me.
  • I bought a microwaveable/freezeable heating pad at Walgreens that has a strap to wrap around my waist (or, you know, whatever you call that circumference below the bump). It looks dorky as hell, but I'm not ashamed to admit I wore it at work a few times when my lower back pain was bad.

  • I will third the chiropractor suggestion, don't know what I would do without mine!

  • Mine usually goes away after a couple steps.. I use an exercise ball.. And everyone saying heating pad on low.. But I get the most relief with a ice pack. Good luck!

I can't really answer this question, but I wanted to see if I could get some insight into my back pain without having to create a new post & aggravating everyone, lol. I'm 37w 2d, & every couple days I will get crippling lower back pain, it feels like "period cramps" & it's constant pain that lasts for hours, but no stomach pain or contractions that I can tell. Walking (if I'm able!), drinking water, laying on my left side & Tylenol does absolutely nothing to make the pain go away, eventually it just stops. So far I've had three really bad instances, & I've brought it up with my ob but she never really explains what it is. I've also been losing pieces of my mp since the first back episode, so maybe it's caused from dilating? After the second instance my ob checked my cervix & informed me that I was 1cm dilated & 50% effaced, but I know that doesn't amount to a hill of beans, lol. My next appointment is tomorrow so I'll be bringing it up once again. Any other ladies experiencing this?

  • Chiropractor for sure. Prenatal massage if your Dr says it's ok. I YouTube prenatal yoga and that's seems to help my back. Hope you feel better soon!

Yoga has helped me a lot - particularly modified Pigeon poses. I also see a chiropractor every 2 weeks and get monthly massages. My midwife wants me to start getting weekly massages...I don't think I'll argue with that!
