Treats for hospital staff

hey ladies!! Hope everyone is having an enjoyable Sunday so far. I had a discussion with my DH last night that i wanted to bake cookies or brownies or something for the hospital staff for when we go into L&D. He suggested something store bought because the staff likely wouldnt eat something homemade for fear of not knowing what was put in it. I should mention my hubby is a cop and is always at the hospital on prisoner watch and when good people come in with home baked goods for the ER staff they often say thank you and throw it away. I tried suggesting a maternity ward is very different than the ER but i wanted to get some input from the team here. What does everyone think?

Re: Treats for hospital staff

  • I'm with your husband.  I would never eat something someone I didn't know made.  I'm kind of OCD and would worry about how clean their kitchen was! That probably makes me crazy!! But I have seen other posts like this where nurses say the same about just throwing away anything homemade.  Store bought would be easier on you anyway. I think I'll just have my husband bring donuts in one day!

I work at Pain Management and when our patients bring in homemade food, we thank them soo much!! But then it usually ends up on the garbage. The only time I have ever seen anyone eat it is if they personally know the patient. It's not because we are mean, it's like other have said.. We don't know what their kitchen is like or what all was put in it. Now, when patients bring in store bought food, it's gone within the hour lol
  • I would also toss it if I didn't know the person. Besides unless you labor is planned (RCS, induction etc.) You have no way to know when you would need these treats so store bought would be easier.

  • As a healthcare provider, I never eat baked goods that patients bring in...no matter how well I know/trust them. We picked up a few packages of Dove chocolates to put in our bags for the staff.
  • Yeah, I think store bought will be the way to go...something sealed and well known so I can guarantee it'll be good. I like the dove chocolates idea...cuz who doesn't love that??

  • I say make it easier on yourself and buy something. My hubby picked up a couple dozen bagels and cream cheese and a box of coffee the day we went home on Sunday morning.

  • We are planning on doing a couple
dozen bagels and a jug of coffee for the staff, unless we are discharged at like, lunch or dinner time, then we will figure something else out.

  • ... Is this a thing? It never ever occurred to me to bring treats for staff. And I definitely didn't when DD was born...

I was going to do bagels in the morning last time, but ended up getting discharged at like 8pm so I didn't do anything. Honestly, if I have another 1 night stay again, I probably won't do anything.
  • As a nurse I'll say bagels and coffee are your best bet! Easy to eat and run.

It was also nurses week when I delivered and they were so good to us I wouldn't think to do anything less. My DH and I both work in healthcare so we thought doing something was necessary.

  • Genius!  I love the idea of bringing treats, and the idea that I don't need to make them. Thanks smart ladies
  • I've pondered bringing store bought treats as well or small gift bags from Bath & Bodyworks or Lush. I just don't know how much to buy.

I used to work as a mother/baby nurse and we always lovedddd the families that brought us stuff! For the most part, I agree that store bought/ordered always goes over best.

Occasionally families would order pizzas or would bring bagels with butter and cream cheese which was such a nice treat on a busy day.

I went out and bought a bunch of $10 starbucks gift cards and thank you cards and am planning on giving each nurse one at the end of their shift as a thank you. It's a little excessive, but this way I know that nurses that work with me and baby get thanked/rewarded instead of whoever happens to be on the day we leave. And like I said, I used to work as a mother/baby nurse so I wanted to go above and beyond because I know how tough and stressful that job can be.

  • I am personally only saying "thank you," and not actually giving any gifts!

I've heard of it but TBH I'm not planning to do anything.

  • Our birthing center doesn't allow homemade treats. When we went on our tour they mentioned if we wanted to bring something a thank you note or store bought would be appreciated. We got a Costco size box of chewy granola bars for the nurses station but blistex lip stick for my individual nurses with a thank you note.
  • Oh this thread has been super useful. It didn't even occur to me that people wouldn't want to eat cookies that I would make - but it makes total sense! And I'm mostly glad i now know this cause I'd be super pissed knowing my cookies got thrown out lol. Bagels and/or donuts it is! Thanks ladies.
  • When we had my son,  we brought mufins and orange juice from costco.
  • I agree with everyone, store bought is the way to go. I ended up going into pre term labor and spent 9 days in the hospital through nurses week. My husband went and got a huge fruit tray and cookies and nurses i didn't even have helping me came in and said thanks and everyone took extra good care of us. When I was released they said the call up when I'm on the way and if they can save the best room for us they will haha
