What happens when they turn 1 - milk question?

we EBF till 7 1/2 months - at that time we started supplementing bc LO wasn't getting enough milk and I'm barely producing at this point (which breaks my heart) - while in the store buying supplemental formula I saw there is special formula for toddlers and those who are older than 1 year - whaaa? I thought once babies turned a year then you don't have to use formula anymore - don't people switch to cows milk at that point?

Re: What happens when they turn 1 - milk question?

  • That's what I thought as well, we have two dairy cows too, lol I hope she can have it at one, lol
  • Loading the player...
  • Yea, you give mainly milk but the toddler drinks can be supplemented as well. They are often flavoured vanilla or 'milk'.
FYI for Canadians, we can usually switch to cows milk at 9 months according to our health regulations.
  • I would love to keep BF if I have any milk left at that point, even if it is still so minimal I want to keep doing it. But I'd love to be done buying formula and having to give that to her! So another question - at 1 year of age isn't that when we stop doing bottles too? So do u just give milk in a sippy cup?
  • Oh good, I didn't want to have to buy separate milk for her, it's like why are we paying to feed these things? Lol they are at least cute...
  • I know it's off subject to your question but I'm curious how did you know you were no longer producing?? I feel a little "emptier" than I used to and figured it was because we started solids. I've gotten used to it but in the back of my mind I wonder about my supply. LO seems satisfied, although some days it seems like he's a bottomless pit!!

At one we recommend transitioning off any formula and over to whole milk. For those that breastfeed, you can continue to do breastmilk as well for as long as you want. Generally, you want to be bottle weaned around 1 year. I am a dietitian and this is what we educate in the US. Toddler formula are really not necessary. They are kind of a scheme by the formula companies.
  • My bff who is a pediatrician told me the toddler formulas are basically for kids who have milk issues or aren't getting enough nutrition!
  • ^ this I think. My friends daughter was still pretty tiny at 1, so she was on while cows milk and toddler formula until the doctor felt she was "big enough". I was wondering about when DS is one too. I EP and planned to start decreasing pumps at 11 mos to be done completely at 12 mos. but then I was like, um then what? Should I keep pimpin a little bit and mix it with almond or cashew milk? Mix nut milks wth a little bit of cows milk? We don't want t to do a lot of cows milk due to family allergies and also the hormones in it. So many options and questions!

I work in the dairy industry and work with dairy cattle. There are no hormones in milk unless it says it has BST in it. BST is illegal in most states.
  • @kassyfry that's good to know! My friends 3 yo daughter had developed 2 breast buds and the ped told her it was due to her having too much dairy and stuff with soy in it (I guess soy is in a lot of stuff you wouldn't think about). So she cut out the soy and decreased her dairy consumption and the buds went away.
  • With my first, I slowly started incorporating cows milk when she was about 11mos. Everyday I would decrease her formula by like .5oz or something. my second was EBF, so I didn't give her milk until I was done nursing (12mos) but she still had it here and there, just not for her main source of a bottle. With my son I plan on doing the same thing I did with my first.

As as far as bottles, honestly I think it's your own preference. My kids having a bottle never bothered me. My girls had their milk in a bottle until about 2 or so!  Even until now (5 and 3) I give them tea/milk in a bottle! They love it. They call it "chai nanna" lol. I know some people don't like it but like I said, it's not something that bothers me. My son actually hates drinking anything other then his formula in a bottle/sippy cup. When I give him water it's in a regular cup and he drinks like an adult lol. It's hilarious because he doesn't even make a mess!
  • For formula-it's only needed until a year, transitional formulas are a marketing ploy more than anything. Here (Canada) many people start introducing cows milk after 9 months. I BF DD1, and had no supply issues, so I didn't introduce cows milk until 14mo (I stopped pumping at work at 13mo, and then used up my freezer stash. Even after introducing it, she only got one cup at daycare, and BF at home for a while longer. This LO I'll be working from home most of the time, so I don't plan to give cows milk as a drink until she's 1.5-2yo. She already has it in her food (like oatmeal or scrambled egg).

Bottles is a preference. I don't allow them at my daycare past a year (I start open cups for water at 6 months, and when they start to get the hang of it, I give a soft spout sippy for formula/BM instead of bottle).

  • With DD all i did was let her finish her formula that we got from WIC(a week after her 1st bday) & switched her to whole milk cold turkey & she did just fine. Ive seen commercials for that formula it looks cool but im switching straight to milk once the boys turn 1.

& I agree with the bottles being a personal preference. DD stopped drinking formula out of bottles @ 10/11 months. Plan to do the same with the boys.

This is the same recommendation as my pedi. We switched to whole milk with DD1 at one year. Gave it in a sippy. Will do the same with DD2.

  • DD1 had to drink formula til 13 months and then we switched her to soy milk.  She had major dairy issues, was on special formula, etc.  We had to take her bottles away at 2.  She was so attached.  DD2 was much easier.  DD3 will probably try soy milk at 12 mo and I'm hoping to stop the bottles around then.  Maybe one before bed.

DD1 could smell milk in a sippy and gag, but couldn't smell it in her bottle.  I thought that was interesting.

This is my first and the thought of taking away a bottle sounds terrifying ! I'm sure taking one away a day to wean off would probably be easiest but a year sounds so soon.....but my pedi said be off by 1 year so we will try...
  • We switch from formula to whole milk in a sippy cup at 12 months.  Although, I think with #4, we let him have a bottle of milk before he brushed his teeth for bedtime each night, and this went on for a long while before we weaned him off that.  The longer you let them have the bottle (past 12 months or so) the harder it seems to be for them to give it up.  Ends in a little bit of a power struggle if they're approaching age 2.

My husband and I both have troubles with dairy so I honestly don't remember the last time we had cow's milk in the house. We drink almond or coconut milk. I also have issues with soy so that's something else we try to avoid.
Nutritionally do babies need cows milk? It's there something special about it that makes it necessary? Or could they have almond or coconut or goats milk? Or if they have a well rounded diet of different solids are they able to get what they need from that and just drink water?
I'm honestly clueless and had been planning on asking our pediatrician about all this at our next check up.
  • @J1D human babies don't need cow's milk, definitely not necessary, but you need to ensure they get enough calcium and vitamin D in their diet elsewhere. Goats milk is a good substitute, but almond milk (while tasty) isn't really a milk and doesnt have the same nutrient profile. If you're using nut milks as a beverage, you can get calcium and vit D elsewhere through solids. If you're in a northern area (like me in Canada) you can give baby vit D drops to make sure they get enough.
