Because sometimes our due dates switch this early and therefore our ticker change days may get updated... should we keep the volunteers as the only people who can start their selected daily thread for ticker changes or should we let anyone create the new thread if they don't see it?

Should only the specified volunteer in the **Read Me First** sticky make their ticker change thread? 44 votes
Anyone can start the ticker change threads on their specified date

Only the volunteer in the **Read Me First** sticky can start that day's ticker change thread
I accidentally voted other. I'm ok with ticker change being whoever wants to start it in the am! I think it's good to have designated people to start the other threads though.
@kimC85 I think that it can sometimes help to make sure threads get started... new people don't always know to start threads but will add in on threads that are already going. I think it will be helpful for some threads to be assigned - that way they get conversations going each day/week whatever it is - otherwise it will be slow when no one starts the conversation. I do agree the ticker change is not necessary for one person to start, as everyone is pretty excited about this and starting it probably won't get missed. Other weekly threads however might. eta.. thought its not like its that strict... if you see that the thread isn't started.. anyone should be able to start it.. IMO..
@spano41 I understand your concern about late starters, but I don't think it takes much to read the first thread to learn about the culture of the board.. I can't speak for others, but I didn't mind jumping in on the already established threads and came sort of late as I have a late EDD...

I totally agree with everything @cabu14 said. I don't think having people assigned to specific non-ticker change threads is micromanaging. I think it will help keep the board organized and keep participation going.
For the ticker change threads, I think that whoever is online first should jump on it. That's how we did the WTO/TWW threads in TTGP and it always worked really well, especially since some people are East Coast/West Coast, so the assigned person may not have started it up yet when people are ready to check-in in the mornings.

@cabu14 Haha...you did not join late! There will be people joining in 5, 6, 7mo from now. I just like it being left open because it allows the board to evolve, people will leave, people will join, there will be ebbs and flows of activity depending on what is going on in people's lives. I just liked TB better before every board had the same organization and rules. I know other months did the assigned thread thing and there was major drama if an "outsider" started one of the assigned threads. It just seems to set up a culture of insiders vs lurkers. That was before the bumpocalypse though, so maybe that wouldn't happen now.
@spano41 I guess what I meant is that there were already 4-5 pages of threads here, it wasn't like I started from the beginning, I was jumping into something already established.
I guess we will have to wait to see how it turns out. The greatest part of internet strangers is their diverse opinions so who knows what will happen!! haha

So, it looks like on the guidelines post that the only daily volunteers have been for the daily ticker changes, not daily posts. As far as the weekly threads go, there are volunteers there, and several of those threads were added due to a person specifically requesting that post in particular be started (see the Ask a STM+, and several others). So if we get rid of volunteers for ticker changes, the only volunteers left are on weekly posts, and not even all of those. Just as an overall "State of the Guidelines" update.
As for my opinion, I want to go with how the majority of active members wish. (Active because they are the people who post and interact daily). I do agree with some PPs that there is a fine line between organization and micromanaging, but it's also important to consider that some weekly threads may get overlooked (and actually have been over looked in the past couple of weeks) without a volunteer for that post. I think it was the general consensus that if the volunteer has not posted the thread they are responsible for by a reasonable hour, then anyone can start it.
It looks like the vast majority of members want the ticker changes to be non-volunteer (myself included), so if that remains the case later this evening, I will remove them from the guidelines post.
I'm all for the daily ticker changes to be non-volunteer. Whoever wants to post it that morning, go ahead. I saw that no one posted the ticker change for Thursday and I was going to start it but don't want to be responsible for it every week!

I think whoever wants to start the ticker change can do it. I thought it was a good idea to assign someone a certain topic/discussion not for them to "micromanage" it but so they can be sure that is started. Helps keep it from 1 person trying to remember all 50 threads that should be started that week. Doesn't mean that volunteer has to start it, just that they make sure it gets deserted one way or another. Just my opinion.
