High-Risk Pregnancy

Partial placental Abruption

Anyone else? I'm 18w5d. Had bleeding that ranges from light to heavy period since 16 weeks, every test was coming back normal. Placenta looked good, uterus, baby everything looked good. Saw the high risk specialist and she saw two clots in my uterus and because of my description of pain when the baby moves she diagnosed me with a partial abruption though she didn't really look at the placenta she said it is the most likely cause and I'm presenting with abruption to a T. She said its shocking and promising I haven't gone into preterm labor yet with the amount of blood. She said my body is fighting to hold onto the pregnancy. Once I hit viability at 23-26 weeks I'll be admitted to the hospital for the remainder of my pregnancy. It's so nerve wracking, plus it's a huge financial hit for our family as I am the breadwinner. Anyone been diagnosed with something similar?

Re: Partial placental Abruption

  • Sorry you're going through that. It's not a positive outcome but I lost my son at 19 weeks due to placenta abruption.  But my body did go into labor quickly. I also experienced it with my daughter and had a full term pregnancy. And am experiencing it now at 25 weeks. I was just recently in last week for bleeding and got steroid shots.

My best advice is do less then they tell you to do. Stay on top of your symptoms, and don't let anyone brush off how you are feeling.

Feel free to pm me if you have specific questions :)
  • Thank you! Sorry you are going through this too!! I'll be pm'ing you. Happy to find another momma going through this.

Hi Sarah, I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I had a placental abruption with my last two pregnancies and neither one ended well. My first one with with twins at 8 weeks, the placenta never attached due to a SCH. I bled buckets from 8 weeks on. My water broke at 14 weeks from all the bleeding, I was admitted to the hospital for 6 weeks and delivered them at 20 weeks due to infection.

My next one was at 16 weeks with no bleeding. My water broke out of no where, we went the L&D and they found the abruption but the baby had already died. (probably from the placenta hitting her)

I'm now 14 weeks with our rainbow and have zero signs of abruption. I tell you this becuase after my second one, I researched the hell out of this and found Dr. Coullam in Chicago who diagnosed me with thrombophilia, put me on blood thinners and is now my main doctor through this pregnancy even though I live in DC and was already working with one of the nations top MFM groups.

Dr. C is a reproductive immunology specialist. She is one of two in the country who have been able to pinpoint the root of placental issues not caused by trauma. I HIGHLY encourage you to call her and have her run blood work on you. She'll do everything over the phone and by mail. I have flown to Chicago once for this pregnancy, but I didn't have to.

If there is a biological reason you're having placenta issues, she will find it and can work with you and your doctors to try to slow down the damage. Her phone consults are around $200 of your insurance won't cover it, the lab work was about $2400 for me completely out of pocket because my insurance didn't consider it necessary, but you can argue that with them since your are already pregnant.

I still wonder to this day if my twins would be alive had I known to call her the first go around.

Please PM me if you want to talk. I also have a blog that goes in to details about my experience with the twins and living in the hospital for 6 weeks with a 5 year old at home. I get emails daily from strangers who have found it helpful, so I'm happy to share that with you as well.

All the best luck to you both.

  • Thank you so much for all that information. In actually in Canada so I don't think the doctor could cross borders for me. Interestingly though, with my pregnancy with my daughter she was born 3 days past her due date. We knew our dates were correct because I had early ultrasounds and we were actively TTC. My daughters placenta looked 3 weeks past due, my midwife said it was "just done, trashed" and had my daughter gone 2 weeks overdue like they let many women, she would have "not done as well". So now, I wonder if I had an abruption with that placenta and that's why it was crappy it hadn't received the blood flow it needed. I also retained that placenta interestingly.

If if this baby now is okay, this will be out last pregnancy. We wanted 3 children but I can't go through this again. I can't put a baby through it either. I actually have Anitibody E this pregnancy as well, it's just like having a negative blood type. My body could fight this baby's blood resulting in making the baby anemic or the baby isn't carrying the antigen and my body won't fight. We had a beautiful 2 year old little girl. This baby is a little man, I don't really want to push my luck anymore. My neonatalogist said "some people create crappy placentas" and blamed genetics but it sounds like your Dr. C is a lot more developed on the subject. I'm going to see if I can read any of Dr Cs research.

I have an apt with my Dr tomorrow. They are weekly. I'm 19w2d. The last few days my bleeding is reducing and the pain hasn't been as bad. I'm really hoping my scan looks better.

Ive created a FB group for placental abruption. I'd love if you joined, women could really benefit from what you've learned. And maybe it's an environment where you can learn or atleast vent as needed.

Im so happy for you that this pregnancy shows no signs of abruption!
  • Best of luck to you Sarah! I'll join the group! I'm always looking for more information on this horrible complication!
