hyperemesis gravidarum

Ok I'm pregnant for the second time. With twins!! I have not been able to eat or drink anything. I've been to the er twice with dehydration. Anyone else had hyperemisis gravedarium while pregnant. If so how did you manage it and what am I doing wrong. All I do is vomit.

  • What have your discharge instructions been and follow up from your OB suggest?  Did they put you on anti-nausea meds?  There was a large thread (I think it's on page 2 now) about morning sickness, but HG is a somewhat different animal than standard morning sickness.  There might be some good ideas there for you though.

Congrats on twins!  There's a few of us here on the board.  We do a Moms of Multiples thread you can jump into next time and join us.

Hope you're feeling better soon.  How far along are you?  The end might be in sight if you're due earlier in Decemeber.

  • My first ob appointment is Tuesday. They gave me Phenergan at the er but it just makes me sleep. I'm still vomiting everytime I sit up. I've missed so much time with my daughter and husband. My due date is December 21. By the hospital. By the ultrasound they did. We will see on Tuesday. :-)

I was diagnosed with HG in my last pregnancy.  Phenergan is not a drug that you can take and still be a functioning human! I would call your OB and ask if there is anything else that they can give you (zofran? Diclegis?) those might make you sleepy too.  I just got Diclegis and realized I can not take it during the day and still function (I was literally dozing on the couch all day yesterday).  I still vomit all morning, but it has subsided the rest of the day.
  • I took Diclegis and threw up the pills before they had time to dissolve every time. My doc switched me to Phenergan and it would knock me out, but I'd still get out of bed, like a zombie, to throw up a few times a night. The latest thing that's seemed to make somewhat of a difference has been switching my prenatal pills to Vitafol Ultra. It might just be a coincidence bc I'm coming to the end of the first trimester, but they really seemed to have helped. Apparently, they can be pretty expensive, but my doc gave me a ton of samples. I took my first one last Tuesday and then took my regular prenatal pills the rest of the week. Tuesday ended up being the only day I felt like a functioning human being. Ask your doctor about Vitafol Ultra and check with your insurance to see if they'll cover it. Like I said, it could just be a coincidence, but I was dead sick last week, except for Tuesday. Once I realized that was the only change I'd made, I switched to Vitafol Ultra completely. Its definitely worth a try! Good luck!
  • I have HG too, and I normally have a few decent hours midday where i feel ok. I'm taking zofran tabs that disolve under the tongue, along with a dose in my IV three times a week. So far, the IVs are keeping me from slipping into the nonstop vomiting sessions.

For the most part I just stay in bed, which I know I'm lucky since I'm not working.

I've been eating probiotic yogurt first thing in the am when I wake up, which seems to help a bit. It's also good for when the crazy heartburn flares up, too.

I switched to the rainbow lite prenatal vitamins pretty early since other brands were making me nauseous before my morning sickness started. They have probiotics in the and are very gentle on the tummy for me.

My nuse also recommended slowly nibbling tums instead of chewing them fast, and that can sometimes help a little.

Make sure you keep your dr posted. It's much more cost effective and less stressful if you can schedule your ivs ahead. It's what allowed me to start doing better.

I hope thing get easier for you soon! It really sucks dealing with this.

  • I have hg also. This is my 2nd pregnancy with hg and this time seems far worse.  I have been on zofran, Phenergan, diclegis,  and just got a reglan pump yesterday.  The pump feels like the worst thing ever to me and unfortunately I had a reaction to the reglan so I had to stop the pump.  When will it end?? I am right there with you girl. If you need to chat let me know.  It's a hard road to go alone. It's like you are hostage in your own body! Good luck!
