Second Prenatal Visit

Hey December Mommies,
My second pre-natal visit is Monday afternoon and I was just curious to know if anyone else has gone to their second visit because I'm just curious to know what to expect.

At my first visit the nurse practitioner informed me of several screenings and I'm not really interested in any screenings simply because I think they would stress me more than anything. However,  I was considering doing the screening for down syndrome bc this screening would also tell us the sex of our baby. Has anyone gotten this screening or any other screenings done? Is there anything you feel comfortable sharing regarding your second visit or screenings?

Thanks ladies,
Jennifer

I got weighed, gave a urine sample, and Doctor checked the heartbeat with the Doppler. Then she went over questions/concerns, and did talk about all the available screenings available. We did opt for the NIPT because of a known genetic issue with me. I went back the next week to give the blood.

Overall, it was a pretty quick appointment.

  • I haven't gone in for app 2 this pregnancy, but last time it was: get weighed, pee in a cup, as any questions I had, and maybe check with a Doppler for the heart beat-depending on how far along you are.

I'm not sure you can compare my experience since I'm having twins, but I've had 3 appts now.  The third was really like the second visit for my OB.  I sat with a nurse went over health history of me and my H in depth, talked about my prior pregnancy, briefly discussed genetic testing (both of which options didn't apply me to for twins).  I then had a urine test, weight, BP check, a ton of blood work (STD panel, and a pre eclamptic panel -the latter is not common) then I had A pap (I was due), another U/S and talked with the NP about my schedule with the MFM office, and delivery options.

  • We're gonna do sequential screen so the first half of that is at my second visit. It includes an ultrasound:) however different practices do things totally differently so there's no way to know what yours will include from ours ... I'd just call

  • At my first visit (10 weeks) I had no idea they were going to make me give a urine sample and peed right before my appt.  Dont do that, apparently.  They took blood for various tests (blood count, checking immunity to rubella, STD tests, check thyroid), did a pelvic exam, listened to baby's HB on Doppler, and informed me of the options for genetic screening.  I got whatever the standard genetic screening is (NT scan plus bloodwork).  We did not get the NIPT (which is what you're referring to) because it is not covered by our insurance.
  • Just FYI that's called an NIPT screen, and there's a whole thread dedicated to it.

Mine is next Thursday (I'll be 11 weeks) so you'll have your 2nd before me. I'll be doing the CVS test. Since I'm 36 it seems a good idea but I don't think I'm much of a risk given our family histories and health. I'm really nervous about it especially after reading about it on the 'what to expect' website.

After I get the results for it I think I'll finally tell EVERYBODY. The secret is starting to be overwhelming especially since comments from others are starting to happen. (Co-worker remarked yesterday that I always seem to have a little 1/4 cup pile of healthy snacks on my desk. I told her I eat one little crumb at a time to keep up my metabolism. ha!)
  • I've had 4 OB appointments already starting at 6w but I also had a bleed around 8w so he wanted to follow up with me a lot after that. My second (regular) appointment consisted of weigh, BP, urine test, and an ultrasound to hear the heart rate and measure the baby. I was also referred to the high risk specialist who does the transnuchal ultrasound and corresponding blood work, which I have coming up on the 31st when I reach 12 weeks. I then see my OB again 2 weeks after that. He sees his patients every two weeks for the first few months and then monthly if everything is going well after that for check in's and ultrasounds each visit, given when you get far into your 3rd trimester it goes back down to every two weeks to weekly.  Good luck with your second visit!
  • @cbrowncolors - are you doing the first trimester screenings before deciding on a CVS?  The non invasive first tri screenings may determine there isn't a need for the invasive CVS.  Of course, whatever you do is what's best for you and your family.

  • I think both tests are happening the same appointment. However, now that I've reread the info I think I will wait and see before doing the CVS test because it sounds rather unpleasant! Also I checked the calendar again. My appointment is actually on Tuesday! Glad its a few days sooner, I'm getting anxious.

we did the screening for Downs, for us it's called an NT scan and it doesn't tell us the sex of the baby...are you confused/thinking about bloodwork like Harmony? I would check out the thread suggested by the PP

I had my 10 week appointment on Wednesday, and it was the usual--pee in cup, weight check, doppler and they took a lot of viles of blood. Same as my 10 week appointment with my first 2 years ago. One of the blood vials was for the MaterniT21 test, which checks for chromosomal abnormalities such as down syndrome(family history for me), and it does show the sex of the baby. I did it with my first, and am a fan. Can't wait for the results!
  • I had my second appointment on Wednesday (at 11 weeks). I had blood work done (they wanted to redo the CBC, and we opted for the NIPT even though it's not covered), then we listened to the heartbeat (yay!), and discussed birth plans. I had a birth defect that will make delivery more difficult either way (vaginal or c-section); originally, I wanted a vaginal birth (and my doc was on board with that plan), but the more we discussed the pros and cons, the more we determined that the potential for severe long term (lifelong, even) complications from a vaginal birth far outweighed potential complications from a c-section.

  • Thanks for all the information ladies! My appointment was today. Very quick ...no screening, but I got to finally hear my little one's heartbeat
