January 2017 Moms

Any nursing mamas?

I'm currently nursing my 16 month old and everything has been GREAT so far! That is, until this week, when my nipples got incredibly sensitive. It really hurts again when he nurses but I REALLY want to keep going for as long as I can, and preferably, even tandem nurse once the baby is here. My fingers are crossed that this is temporary.

How's it going for other nursing mamas?

My 23 month old (I feel silly counting in months haha but she's not quite 2!) Nurses only twice a day now.  I was all a out the tandem nursing and now I'm kind of thinking I'm ready to be done because bf was so rigorous with her, I just felt like I never put her down. I'd like to have a few months of no having to stop and nurse before the next baby comes. I was following her self weaning and it just hasn't happened yet. I'm wondering if this is going to be a big jealousy issue when the time comes. I still feel very normal but I'm only 5w1d. So no sore nips yet.

I am no longer nursing but know a number of moms that have continued to nurse through pregnancy. Some days they hate it, but keep going through the pain and/or over touched feeling. Some have actually ended up weaning while pregnant and then when baby comes, the older child starts nursing occasionally again and they are able to do some tandem nursing. I think it's different for everyone.

  • My DD is just about 16 months old. She is very happily still nursing. Everything is going fairly smooth except at the beginning of the day I get waves of nausea when she latches.

  • My 18 month old nurses a lot still- probably 5 times a day and 3 times a night. I immediately noticed a supply drop before I even got a positive pregnancy test. I'm only 4w4d. She pulls off and says "uh oh" and "more". No pain yet thankfully. I'd like to wean her from night feedings so I can get more sleep and hopefully have more milk for her during the day. We are both not ready to be done. I want to nurse as long as I can. I'm also wondering about jealousy issues when the baby comes.

I am still nursing my little one who turned 2 in March. I am a little worried about how everything will play out but ultimately I am hoping that she will hate colostrum and stop on her own. Lol. It might be wishful thinking. She is way to attached at the moment to pull the Boobie rug out from under her right now. She has amped up her clingy behavior to a whole new level recently. It's almost like she knows changes are coming.
  • I am still nursing my 18 month old twice a day.  I'm hoping she will self-wean before this new baby comes.  I would really love a break before I start nursing a newborn again.  I feel bad that I'm wishing my supply would diminish with this pregnancy and she will lose interest because there isn't enough/any milk left.

  • Nursing my 18 month old about 4x/day. She is finally night weaned. (Praise the lord.) I used to want to tandem nurse, but now I'm not sure. I have no idea how to wean her fully.
  • @ThePax89 Did you have a method for night weaning? I'm so weak! When she cries for me at night I know it will be way faster for me to give her the boob than let her cry and eventually fall back to sleep.
  • I'm nursing my 10 month old now, but we are starting to wean. I have enough milk frozen to make it about 3-4 more months. My goal was to breastfeed for a year. After all we went through, I'm very proud!

I'm still nursing my 7 months old but am experiencing drying up... I'll go for as long as I can and after I have this baby I'll be putting dear son back on the boob!
  • @underthesea so at 15 months she started boobing like 4 times/hour all.freaking.night. Eventually, i'd grab her from her crib after first wakeup and put her in bed with us, nurse her to sleep, and then leave to go sleep elsewhere. DH said the first night she woke up again and cried for 20 min, but she had him to console her, and it wasn't terrible screaming. By the second night she cried briefly and after 3-4 nights there were no tears. Eventually, I dropped that feeding altogether and he just took her from her crib and brought her in bed (the key is that I slept elsewhere). Miraculously, she started sleeping through the night a few nights/week in her crib!

We tried the jay Gordon method and it was not successful.
  • I was exclusively pumping for my 9month old from the time he was born, but a week before my BFP I started drying up pretty bad. And I was already struggling after get my first PP period. I knew I had to wean when it started being painful to pump.

Ultimately, I was happy to wean and have "normal" boobs for a few months before the next round of breastfeeding. As far as the soreness goes, maybe try breaking out the lanolin again to help soothe??

Does anyone here still nurse to sleep? My daughter only nurses to sleep now and I'm not sure how to break that habit. She won't take a bottle and will only drink water from a cup. (She's 18 mo)
  • @JennaLee1486 that's fantastic. Congratulations
  • @ThePax89 I still nurse my 19 month old to sleep 5 nights a week. The other two nights, I teach evening classes and she does fine drinking some milk (almond milk) from a sippy and going down for my husband. Can your DH try to put her down? Give her a big dinner/snack before bed? I know at this point they don't actually need milk before bed, but it's going to be a hard habit to break for us too. In a 24 hour period, I'm still nursing at least 7 times. We need to work on that because my milk supply is really tanking.
  • Still nursing here.  My two-year-old son typically nurses first thing in the morning and before nap time and bedtime.  Nursing calms and settles him down so he can get to sleep - he usually can't sleep without it.  He started biting me before I knew I was pregnant so I think my milk may have already started to change a little.  He's back to normal now and not biting.  Im having a little sensitivity but so far it hasn't been unbearable.  I'm thinking once the milk flavor changes, he'll probably wean himself.

  • @underthesea I need to try a new beverage. She's a tough cookie. She's unbelievably finicky. I need her off my tit. I feel so bad, but it's okay...we've had a solid run!
