TTC After a Loss

High Risk Doctor

Do any of y'all see a high risk doctor? I think the official term for them is maternal fetal medicine specialist.
Anyway, I am seeing one on May 17th (unfortunately way further out than I would like :/) and was curious if the procedures that have been used are normal.
They apparently faxed my appointment date and time to my current doctor.  That was a bit annoying to begin with since that didn't take into account my schedule whatsoever! I was able to get things moved around with my work because I don't want to have to change it and it be pushed even further out!  I needed to check and make sure they take my insurance so I called in this morning.  Figured while I was on the phone I could also find out my new doctor's name (mostly so I could google and find out his or her credentials).  The lady informed me that she's not sure who I'll be seeing since the schedule hasn't been set up yet for that day.  I was under the impression by what my doctor had told me that she was picking a specific specialist who would have knowledge on my particular health issues!!  Now I found out that she's just sending me somewhere to some random doctor!  Which makes me concerned that if I do start going there on a regular basis I'll just see a different doctor each time?  That seems like a big mess to have to explain my situation every time.  I also asked the lady the doctor names of that practice and she wouldn't tell them to me!
Does anyone know if this is normal? For me not to be scheduled with a specific doctor but just seen by whoever happens to be there that day?  Maybe i'm freaking out for no reason and everything will be fine.  Just wanted to see what others thought and if anyone had encountered a similar situation.

Re: High Risk Doctor

  • I saw a MFM when I was pregnant with #1. I have a family history of pre-term labor/deliver and saw her a few times in my first trimester. We saw a woman who was part of a bigger hospital, but saw people in our area a couple days a week. She was the only person available so we didn't run into your issue. That situation with them not telling you the practice doctors names seems bizarre. Is the practice out of a hospital or would they have a website you could look up?

As far as who you see when you go, my regular OBGYN is a large practice. I technically have a doctor, but see any range of doctors or nurse practitioners depending on who is available. Also during my pregnancy, every visit was with a different doctor because they want you to know all of the doctors at the practice in the event that one was on call when you went into labor etc.

I would keep the appointment and consider it at least getting in the door. Once you are in you can get all the questions you have answered and since your an established client then you will have a little more knowledge of their process. Managed care can be so obscure. Good luck!

  • That sounds pretty typical for a consult appointment in my experience.  You can call and reschedule for a convenient time and date once the initial appointment is scheduled.  There may be several doctors at that practice who could handle your issues.  The one you see at the first appointment will probably be the same one you follow up with at later appointments.  I hope things go well!

thanks ladies! That makes me feel better that it's seemingly standard procedure. I tend to stress over stupid things lol

I know this is from last month but I'm just joining this board. Do you mind me asking how was your appointment? I also saw a MFM last week because of 3 consecutive losses and got some blood work and testing done, I'm waiting for my results sometime next week.

I also was referred to a specific Doctor my by Ob, she did mention that two specialist work at that facility and if the one she recommended wasn't available his other colleague would see me, so I would say it's standard procedure.

  • My last MFM was like that. And I quite enjoyed it. I never had to explain anything, even if it was a doctor I hadn't seen.

Its not the same but my ob was like that. Like others have said, they have us see whoever is available and have us meet every doctor. Mine said the same thing, they want me to have at least met them incase they do my delivery. My Dr i see now was originally in that line up but he is now the only one i deal with because my partial molar. I hope to keep him as my ob for my next pregnancy. I really like him and it would be nice to have someone who completely knows my situation.

That is super odd though that they wouldnt share the names. Id also like to know how things went.
