You should do a search in here, I think there was another poll with the same question a few months ago - may give you another pool of data to work w.

  • Thanks @vssbrm we are pretty sure we are doing 1 as well (dh is very concerned about twins...I wouldn't mind it as much but we really can't afford it!) but was just curious as to what others had decided,  I've been on here for almost a year and don't remember seeing a poll like this but maybe it was when I took a few months break!  Good luck to you as well and wishing you a h&h 9 months!

I had big concerns about having twins, dh already has twins in his family so our odds were only higher. After IVF, both being able to afford twins and having any complications are high on my mind. DH would love twins (as well as my in-laws), I'd rather do 1 at a time.
I think I remember this question being asked a few mths ago around the time we were doing purcretrieval - March. I could be wrong! Keep us posted on what you decide!!

If this 3rd IUI is a fail, we're doing IVF and we decided to transfer 1.  I do not want to risk twins and the higher likelihood of complications and/or early delivery.  I personally know 2 couples, both who did IVF and ended up with twins.  They both had very serious complications during pregnancy and they are very lucky their children made it (because they almost didn't).  I know there are plenty of girls who go on to deliver twins no problem, I just would prefer to not have the added stress if I have a choice!

Our clinic brainwashes everyone into having singleton births. I wanted twins - you get a family in only one go!

Then my coworker had twins. They were born at 30 weeks, 1 lb 9 oz and 3.5 lbs. Both lived but were in the hospital for a long time.

    ***huge trigger warning*****

i wanted 2 embryos put in (hoping that one would take). My clinic refused and made me only have 1. Thank goodness, bc it worked and I had a healthy, full term 9 lb baby. NEVER again will I hope for twins. A singleton was the best for me!
  • I personally chose to transfer two embryos for each of my three transfers. The first two were negative, and the second resulted in a positive single pregnancy that unfortunately ended at 9 weeks. For my next transfer I am going to ask that my three remaining embryos be transferred as I have failed to get a take home baby from each of my previous transfers. A lot of it is personal preference, but I've noticed that some doctors have policies that they don't stray from. My doc has never had a problem with transferring two. If you do PGS testing, then it is usually recommended to only do one because you have a higher likelihood of it sticking and giving you a take home baby.

My doctor recommended two for me since I'm 35. I said fine since six iuis didn't work and even though I really didn't want twins I was willing to take that chance. But when it came down to it the embryologist had two perfect 5AA embryos and said we should just do one. So glad we did since the one worked and now I'm a little over 7 weeks.
  • My RE has said she will only do 1 for our first IVF (FET in June) since I'm 32. If this one doesn't work, I may try and push for 2 for the next cycle. My coworker just had twins after putting two in and she was on bed rest for about 2 months prior to delivering but she said this was her last shot since she is 39 and her DH is 48 they weren't going to try again and had been trying for over 10 years so she said it was worth it.

Transferred 1 for my fresh IVF cycle.  It failed, so doc rx transferring 2 for my FET.  Now officially 9 months pregnant with twins!  I'm fortunate to be feeling great and have had no complications.  Glad we tried 1 first and glad we were more aggressive with the FET.

  • I'm moving to IVF if this last IUI fails and we've already had our consult. My RE said that transferring more than one embyro does not increase you chances of pregnancy, only of multiples. But he would be open to transferring two if that's what we wanted. DH was not a fan of that idea. LOL. Good luck with whatever you decide!

We transfered 2 and now have 16 month old B/G twins.  To be totally honest, if I would have been able know all of the twin related and preemie related complications my kids would have to deal with I would turn back time in a heartbeat if it would save them some of the major health issues they dealt with.  But I can also tell you that I do love being a twin mom, there is a special bond they have that you just don't get with a singleton.  The first year is survival but it got so much easier after they turned 1.

We are only transfering 1 embryo this time, that's all we have but either way we would not be going for a second set of twins. :)

Good luck with your decision and FX for a successful cycle!

  • I think that it's such a personal and circumstantial decision that it might hard to compare to others.

We are prepping for our first round of IVF. My doctor says that she usually only transfers one, but that it's really up to the couple and their own set of circumstances. She and DH and I talked ad nauseam of the pros and cons of one vs two, and we decided that for us, two would be best. We can afford complications that may come with a twin pregnancy, and this might be (hopefully not!!) my only shot at getting pregnant since we might be racing against dumb biology. For us, the risk of twins is worth it. Good luck with coming to your decision!
  • We will be doing one- our RE agreed with our decision saying that if it is a 5 day transfer and everything looks good then she likes to do one.

If I was over 35 or we had to do a 3 day transfer then she would consider two. Our reasons for going with one are mainly due to the pregnancy. Twin pregnancies can be more difficult than a single (obv) and there is a high chance of complications or NICU stays. I am also a petite person and worry that a twin pregnancy might be too hard on me.

Obviously it is different with everyone and every family. My friend is doing IVF right now as well and they are transferring two. She is in her 30's and actually is an identical twin herself. :)

Me: 28, DH: 30 Married July 2014  DX: Severe MFI- 3 failed IUI's, IVF #1 Egg retrieval June 4th 2016, 5 day transfer- BFP Baby Boy! EDD 2/25/2017. Our sweet miracle Carter Bennett arrived 2/12/2017 6 lbs, 2 oz 19 inches. <3 Surprise BFP!!! Baby Girl due 10/1/2018.

  • My RE basically only likes to do 1 for our age/health group. We could have argued for 2, but we decided that 1 was good for us with our history of twins in the family.
