Telling the boss?

so....
we just found out last Thursday we are expecting...
im torn.  DH says don't tell the boss until I'm further along (we work in a place where a lot of people know his family small town!)
but, it is a factory.  We make electrical coils.  I don't know what they are for, except people always say "pretty much everything" lol.
theres slight exposure to some fumes from resign(sp?), and varnish, but it's not bad not extremely noticeable and it never really has been.  It's pretty well ventilated.  But the spoils of wire we lift can get really heavy.  They are probably 15-35 lbs.  I've been lucky enough lately to have DH nearby so he could lift them for me the last week. So frustrating because I think I should at least tell my lead person so she knows, but HE wants to wait until I'm further along so we don't "jinx" it.  Bahhhh!!!
what do you all think?  Tell her now or wait?  I don't want to go behind his back, but medically speaking it might be better to say something

  • What PP said, but I'd like to add that you can probably get a doctor's note saying that you need to avoid heavy lifting and fumes. It doesn't need to specifically say "she's pregnant" unless you want to bring it up, but can get lighter duty.

  • I think you should talk to your doctor and ask if the things you are doing are safe in pregnancy.  If the answer is no, then you need to talk to your boss.
this is the exact advice i was going to give. if the answer is yes though, i would wait til around 12 weeks to tell.
  • I told my boss as soon as I found out I was pregnant. Just in case there were complications with the pregnancy that I needed to be out for a period of time, we were on the same page.

You can't jinx a pregnancy. Your husband is silly. Whatever happens will happen, you can't control it now. The ball is out of your court.

But I agree with other PPs about asking a doctor about your working conditions, but honestly, I'd tell your boss right away. Plus, she's under ethical obligation to NOT tell your medical reason to other employees anyway. If someone found out, it's because you guys told people.

I say, get your boss' support! I'm not too far along, just found out and told my boss right away. I work in a physically demanding work place (lifting, bending carrying, etc) with exposure to rat poison, industrial-grade pesticides,. bio-hazards and prison-inmate labor crews. Very male-dominated work place. You bet I need this man on my side, knowing WHY I can't perform all my normal job duties (at least not the same way), why I'm exhausted, why I have to pee 27 times an hour, why I need to detour to the break room for ANOTHER snack. We are understaffed to boot. He couldn't be more supportive. He said right away, "Congratulations, so that's what's going on with you." Now, he is understanding of me knowing I'm pregnant rahter than worried that I my attitude or work performance has changed.

If you were lifting items that heavy regularly prior to getting pregnant, and you are having a low-risk pregnancy, it is extremely unlikely that continuing to lift them will cause any issues.  I would agree with the advice to ask your doctor first, and then if there are risks you need to avoid at work, talk to your boss.  I was used to lifting 15-20lb weights before getting pregnant, and because I was used to it, I was able to continue doing it throughout my pregnancy.  The "you can't lift heavy stuff when you're pregnant!!" edict is really outdated.  You're pregnant, not broken.  Life goes on.  When I get pregnant with baby #2, I'm sure I'll still be hauling baby #1 around on the regular, and she's already almost 25lbs.
  • I told my boss almost as soon as I found out because I work with known teratogens and needed to modify things to stop exposing myself to them.  I found it really helpful because when I was suffering from pretty awful morning sickness she was able to be more accommodating.
