Waxing?

Since summer is right around the corner (or already here for you southerners... but up here in the northeast the temps are still in the 50's), anyone considering some "downstairs" waxing?  I hate shaving that area anyway, let alone with a giant belly in the way.  But I also don't intend to let being pregnant stop me from hanging out at the pool and enjoying the sunshine!

Any thoughts from STMs on how bad a wax is during pregnancy?  I know it's safe (assuming you go to a reputable salon), but is it super painful with the increased blood flow to your nether-regions??

Pre-pregnancy I have gotten a few of them, but I feel like this would be a whole different ballgame... !

Re: Waxing?

  • I'm in NC so our summers are hot and humid. I plan on waxing and my appointment is actually later this month before we go to the beach for a week. I think I'd rather put up with the pain than trying to maneuver around the big bump. One less thing to struggle with while pregnant!  :)

  • I also plan on going, but I'm not waxing... I'm doing "Sugaring" instead since it's a lot less irritating. I've had both done in the past and sugaring only adheres to hair, whereas wax also adheres to skin, so it's a LOT less painful.
  • @texasmama2014 LOL

@BritMC18 - does sugaring last as long, or do you have to get it done more frequently?
  • @skelly1990, me too! What part of NC are you from? I'm in the Raleigh area!

I've been shaving, but it's definitely getting harder. I'm not sure if I can keep up as I get larger.

  • FTM here. I got waxed probably 3-4 times before pregnancy and have now had 2 while being pregnant. The first time I got it done while being pregnant, not gonna lie, it did hurt more but was bearable. The big difference I really noticed was down there stayed red and sensitive for longer but this last time I just got waxed I didn't shave inbetween waxes (which they say not to) and it was such a breeze. I also took Tylenol for the first time at my last wax so that could be a factor and it was hardly red or irritated right after I got it done. I personally think it's SOO worth it. I don't even mind shaving but the hair stays away so much longer when waxed and way less grows back and much thinner too. Good luck!!!
  • I only got 1 or 2 pre-pregnancy (I usually shave).  I got waxed last month before a beach vacation and YOWZA!!!  I may do it again just because I can barely see that area and I don't want it to get unruly for bathing suit season.  But I'll probably take a Tylenol before I go.
  • Yes, absolutely.  If you haven't tried a salon that uses hard wax vs soft wax, look for that!  Hard wax is much less painful (imo) because it mostly adheres to the hair, rather than your skin.

  • I'm an esthetician and I've actually been doing my own with hard wax. If you're looking to get one done, I would suggest finding someone who uses hard wax. Once I get too big, I'll have a friend do it.
  • I normally shave, but they make nair for your bikini area so I've been considering trying that. Taking the prenatal makes my hair grow SO fast it's annoying so I've haven't shaved in a while.

I've gone old school and have been using Nair. It used to really irritate my skin but I think they've changed the formula recently. It gets everything off. It doesn't last quite as long as waxing but it is far far easier than shaving.

Your post talked me in to trying it, so thanks! Lol. The only reason I haven't yet is because my skin is sensitive but my sister tried it recently and she didn't have any issues and our skin types are pretty similar.
  • I just had my eyebrows waxed, and a mani/pedi on Friday for the first time ever. I guess I am way behind the times with being stylish, etc... but question... when you girls get waxed... are you taking off everything??? or is it just on the sides so nothing escapes the swimsuit? I bought my maternity suit but have not had the opportunity to wear it yet. Its still too cold out where I live.

  • @searchingforameaning I like it all taken off, occasionally I'll leave a strip
  • For some reason, I can't see anything but now I really want to know what gif or pic it was. Haha!

Oh and I definitely got one done first trimester at a reputable salon- no double dipping, very clean, etc. but my body reacted to it differently than pre-pregnancy. I got little red bumps on my lower belly and to this day, they haven't gone away! They itched before but now they don't bother me. I think I am definitely more sensitive to it now.

It has been on my mind though- not just for Summer but knowing I'm going to be bleeding heavily and all, I'd just prefer to be hairless down there (totally to each their own). I'd like to go once closer to my due date so it doesn't grow back quickly that I need to go through it the second time. Might be hard, we'll see.
  • I got my first wax (a Brazilian) while 23 weeks pregnant. It wasn't bad. It definitely hurt but there were no tears or screams. I think my pain tolerance is moderate. No negative reactions either; just the standard sensitivity as explained on the after care directions they gave me. I went to a very reputable place and had a great aesthetician who talked to me the whole time and kept me distracted.
  • I'm a Brazilian wax kinda gal. If you feel you need something for the pain take a Tylenol before you get it done to help with the pain. IMO if the person who is dong the waxing knows what they are doing it shouldn't really hurt.

  • @MamaKSquared I'm right outside of Raleigh in the Garner/Clayton area!
  • I am so glad this post was made! I have been trying to shave and it is like the blind leading the blind. I have to rely on what I can feel. I know there must be little patches lol but dh never says anything. I am looking for a shower mirror that won't fog up...any suggestions?
  • I started waxing over a year ago about every 5 weeks. Since becoming pregnant it may hurt a tad more but nothing to keep me from continuing to go! But honestly I can't imagine starting while pregnant because it  either hurts more the first few times or just takes awhile to get used to it!

  • I've never waxed before, but am seriously considering it...so glad to see this post!  I'm not real concerned about the pain of it.  But how long does it usually last? That'll be the deciding factor for me
  • @Sunnyn75 it's different for everyone really. When I shave I feel the need to shave again in about a week, when I get waxed I can go 5 or 6 weeks before I start feeling like I need another wax. The hair is also way thinner and there's a lot less so the more you get waxed the longer you can go between waxes and the longer the hair stays away
  • @texasmama2014 LOL

@BritMC18 - does sugaring last as long, or do you have to get it done more frequently?
@PineappleMD - they recommend every 4 weeks, but friends tell me they can get away with every 6.
  • Well, I am an avid waxer.  Pretty routine every 6-8 weeks.  HOWEVER....I remembered getting waxed with my last baby and it was awful!!!!  I felt bruised and burnt and it was just hell.  I think its because of all of the extra blood flow happening, so I have totally refrained this pregnancy.  I told my fiance that he will have to shave me because I cant see anything anymore.  LOL
  • I've done waxing and sugaring while pregnant. I 100% agree sugaring is way less painful then waxing.  I went a good 3-4 weeks before I noticed any hair growth.  If you're brave you can make your own sugaring wax at home. It's pretty easy!
  • I don't notice a difference in sensitivity to waxing while pregnant.  However, I used to be a religious bikini waxer, probably for several years, and it gave me such horrible ingrown hairs I decided to stop doing it.  As much of a pain in the tush shaving is since I can't see it anymore, I'm going to continue to do so with the help of a mirror.  While pregnant with DD, I actually cut my finger trying to shave by memory down there, but now I know to be way more careful lol.  Can't wait until I get cleared for laser after this one is born!!!

  • I gave nair a try and it has been a life saver for me! That being said, I have DH put it on for me because none of our mirrors are good enough and I can't see at all down there anymore.
  • Just did it-- don't recommend it if you're not a waxer to begin with! I'm just not sure what to do. My skin is so so sensitive right now and shaving is giving me terrible rashes-- but it was almost as bad with the waxing (actually, I did the sugaring) and so things don't look much better. I don't really care-- Except when I'm in a bathing suit and now that's it's heating up I'm hoping to be living at the pool and beach.

  • haha I'm happy to see this post! I have an appt. scheduled for next week before our vacation and I'm not overly concerned...just not really looking forward to it

  • Just got my brazilian wax today. I probably have to go in once more if I don't go into labor in the next 2-3 weeks! It didn't hurt as much as I had anticipated. What should have taken 15 mins turned into 35 mins because the lady was so cautious using smaller strips and moisturizing in between. I can't even see down there but my DH said it looks "so bare." Hahaha. I'm going to put lots of aloe vera to prevent any irritation. So far so good!
  • @PineappleMD Bahahaha! I was still trying to decide if I wanted to do it - you've convinced me the answer is definitely no!  (Also my mother would have tried to disown me too)

  • ... and then my MIL practically disowned me for posting "private" things on fb... hahaha
Lol, thanks for that story. I'm half awake in bed right now just smirking while DH is snoring up a storm.

I thought about labor too while getting waxed and just for a minute, I thought, "hey...this isn't too bad. Maybe I have a high level of tolerance to pain." But that thought was soon ripped away (pun intended-I love puns if y'all hadn't noticed) by the waxing of the "sensitive" part (it's right in the center).
