Vaccines?

I've heard that they are recommending that all pregnant women get certain vaccines during the 2nd/3rd trimester now. I just got the tdap booster shot like 8 months ago, so it seems kind of a waste to me to get it again so soon. I'll bring it up with my doctor at my next appointment, but just wondering if anyone else has already had this convo with her doc and what the doc recommended.

Yup, TDAP is recommended during 3rd tri for each pregnancy. This standard of care has changed between 2012 and now, since they believe some immunity from the vaccine may be conferred to the baby in utero. There's also an increase in Pertussis (whooping cough) outbreaks in various places around the country, especially in places with low rates of vaccination.

  • They actually gave me mine in the hospital after I delivered.  I think some obs are still hesitant in giving it while pregnant.

  • Same as what @shevaCC said.  I already started talking to my OB about it as well as the rhogam shot I'll need around 20 wks.

I got mine after I delivered at 37 weeks. I will try to do mine in the 3rd trimester this time around. I had the TdAP in November 2014 and also with my first in December 2010.

I had mine sometime in the third tri with DD, and my DF and our parents did as well. I wanted to make sure the people who'd be around the most had the extra protection, especially with DD being born in November. I'll be  asking them all to do the same this time around with DS being due in November as well. If you're in doubt, YouTube a video of a baby struggling to breathe with whooping cough...

  • TDAP is standard but I never got one. My OB likes to give it in the hospital just after birth but I had a fever and infection so no vaccine for me. Then there were a number of complications and long story short I never got it. However, it is also recommended that any family members who will be around the baby regularly should get it so our parents and siblings all did.
  • Lurking from July
it is standard for the majority of our group to get it around the 30 week mark or so as it helps vaccinate the babies before they are born particularly against pertussis. Even if you have had a booster many dr's reccomend getting it again for that reason and as it is not harmful to the mother to get it again. :)

  • It's been said but I'll chime in.

I distinctly remember asking my doctor about this last pregnancy when I got the shot, and he said that even if I got pregnant a year later I should get the shot again in 3rd tri. However, there was an outbreak in the next state over when I was pregnant.

I also recommend you ask those who will be in close contact with your baby to have the booster if they haven't in the last 10 years. My husband and both my parents got it. It was offered for free by the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile Clinic. Just google to see if there is one in your area.

  • Thanks for the input, everyone. I live in France and I get the impression the booster shots are not really standard practice here during each pregnancy. We'll see what the doctor says... My in-laws and husband have just gotten their boosters so no worries there.

  • I got a flu shot and tdap shot October 2015 when we planned to start TTC. I'll repeat that this fall too (3rd trimester).
  • .I received both the TDaP and the flu vaccine with my last pregnacy. I'd encourage you to ask your OB for their advice though.

@whaat I'm sure the thread you were hoping this was will happen at some point. Maybe closer to November? Don't give up hope..
  • I haven't been pregnant since 2012. That was my second pregnancy, and I'd gotten my Dtap (or tdap, whichever) in my first pregnancy, so I didn't get the booster again for that time. It hasn't been brought up yet this time, but really, if they offer it, why the heck not? It won't hurt anything to get it again and it could help baby.

Hubbs got his booster this Summer because he cut his arm at work, which is good, because he's a whiney baby and wouldn't get it if I just told him to because "It makes his arm sore...wahh wahh" LOL

Lol I came here for drama but this was a different kind of vaccine question.
Well, I just learned on babycenter that zika is actually a government plot to cover up vaccine damage to babies from maternal tdap vaccines. Also, to encourage people to wear deet so they get cancer and the pharmaceutical companies make more money. It's pretty much the perfect crime.

That was a fun read. I highly recommend it.
  • And just in case you all can't see me rolling my eyes at my computer screen, I promise I don't actually think zika is a government plot.
