really sensitive gag reflex?

Sorry if this is already a topic, I couldn't find a search function (I am on my phone, using the app). Ever since I hit the second trimester my gag reflex has hit overdrive. I have always had a really sensitive reflex but this is nuts! Anyone else have this issue? This is my second child, and other than developing preeclampsia at 34 weeks with my first and being hospitalized till he was born at 37 weeks, I really didn't have any negative symptoms, so this is all new to me.

Re: really sensitive gag reflex?

  • Yep! Brushing my teeth (or more specifically, when I clean my tongue) is horrible. 3/4 times I've gotten sick have been thanks to the gag reflex.

  • Same. Brushing my teeth is so awful. I switched from my electric toothbrush to a regular one which has helped a little.
  • Yep! I gag every time I brush my teeth!

@ash111916 I'm the same. 85% of my vomiting has been from brushing my teeth.
  • Teeth brushing is a dangerous task when I am pregnant.

  • I'm also struggling with brushing my teeth, but also when I have any phlegm at all. This allergy season is particularly difficult!

Samesies. It picked up (got worse) when I hit ~11 weeks. Brushing my teeth/tongue cleaning is my least favorite task of the day now.  :(

Brushing my teeth is worst for me too!  Otherwise my gag reflex has been okay, but I hate brushing.

My gag reflex I thought was already sensitive but holy crap it's even worse now. I threw up a vitamin the other night because it hit the spot just right.
  • Oh gosh yes. Gagging for no damn reason is why I still throw up occasionally. I'll feel fine and then all of a sudden I'll cough then I'll gag from the cough and if that happens 2 or 3 times my stomach will start churning. This happened the other day and I sat there like, "I'm not going to throw up! I'm not!" Well.... I did. Didn't even make it all the way to the bathroom. So much for feeling better at 12 weeks.... going on 14 Friday.....

I have had HG with the 3 girls. I am 16 weeks now and sometimes, even a whiff of something will make me dry heave. But I am hoping it goes away once the nausea, etc has subsided.

  • It happens when I brush, but also just randomly. Glad to see I am not alone in this though. Hope it passes quickly for all of us.

Ugh, I've been gagging at random times throughout the day. The other day, a sneeze made me gag and I was scared to sneeze from there on out. Even more strangely, I have been dreaming about gagging which, in reality, is me actually gagging in my sleep and causing me to wake up. Weird shit.

    Also the tooth brushing.
  • Get a kid-sized toothbrush! Legit, it made things way more bareable. Also switched to the floss sticks instead of using the long strings, made a huge difference. I'm not saying everyday is awesome, but a good 90%.

Yup! If I cough to hard (which is inevitable now due to allergies) I puke and I gag EVERYTIME I brush my teeth.

I had this so badly with my first. I too have a sensitive gag reflex. Second trimester was worse for me than the first because of the extra sensitivity. Ugh. It got better over time though. Hope it will for you too. This time I haven't had it too bad (yet).
  • At first I was complaining of no symptoms and being afraid unsure if all's good. Now at 13wks nausea is kicking my butt. Karma...
  • Even anticipating a bad smell makes me gag. I open the garbage can and even if it doesn't stink, it makes me gag. Currently it really does stink, so instead of taking the trash out, I put the whole can in the garage for H to deal with later. Cannot handle it.

  • Brushing my teeth was problematic early on but it's been better lately. The coughing really hard tho... No joke! I have legit almost thrown up so many times because I coughed too hard.
  • I can't even read/hear the word gag or I start to gag. Now I'm gagging.
