Birth Control

Just wondering what plans people had for birth control.

I had Mirena between my first 2 girls no problems or side effects and thought about doing that again this time but we would like to have another one and not wait 5 yrs..but it seems pointless to get iud and then remove it in a year. But I don't know any other BC methods well don't have any past experience with them. I think the patch possibly but can't find an official website to look at. Does anyone know anything about it?

Re: Birth Control

  • I just received the depo shot at my 6 wk pp visit. The injection hurt a bit more than others I got while pregnant, and the injection site hurt for like two days afterwards. No other side effects so far. The best part is that I don't have to go back and get another shot until July 1st, which works great for me. No daily pills or weekly patches to remember which is a blessing when having to care for a newborn as a first time/ stay at home mom!

  • I tried the patch before and it never stayed on, it was always peeling at every corner. It works for some and not for others. Have you looked at other options? I think I've tried almost every kind of bc and I've yet to find something I like. I've tried mirena, patch, ring, multiple different pills. I've never tried the depo shot though, my Dr advised against it but I'm not sure why and didn't think to ask because I went with the mirena (years ago).
  • I was on the patch before I got pregnant with LO.  I used the generic one, Xulane I believe is he name of it.  I never had any issues with it falling off or causing any skin irritation as long as I rotated it weekly.  It was a better option for me because I'm awful at taking a daily pill and not having my period for months on end freaks me out because I've had an ectopic pregnancy before and I NEED to know everything is normal.  It also did wonders for clearing up my acne (yeah, 27 and still breaking out like a teenager!) just my input, I plan to go back on it after my 6 week appointment.
  • I was on the patch for several years. I prefer it over the pill. My only complaint was it had a tendency to shift around. A lot of that had to do with my activity level. Sweat and clothing rubbing against it made it move around a little, but only once did I have one completely come off and not stick back on (that was after a 9 mile run with the patch on my butt, so probably not a common occurence for everyone else). I have sensitive skin so I was afraid it would bother me, but I was fine as long as I shifted it around.  Switching back and forth between butt cheeks was my favorite- my skin wasn't as sensitive there as it was on my lower abdomen. I would still recommend it over the pill.

I'm looking into the IUD this time. It does the same as the patch and pill, I just never have to think about it at all. And it's a couple years before I can have another baby anyway.

I'm also planning to go back on depo. i was on it for a few years & then stopped to give my system a break.. & of course, got pregnant. at my 6 week appointment I'm going to speak with my doctor about going back on it. i like that i don't have to remember to take a pill daily, that you only need 1 shot every 3 months, & that i don't have to deal with a period. i personally didn't think that the shot hurt (depending on who gave the injection), but the injection site is sore for a couple days after. a lot of women complain about weight gain from the shot, but i never had this problem.
  • We are opting for mirena, it will be my first IUD but I'm bad about taking the pill and we want to wait on our next pregnancy for a few years.

  • I had Mirena last time between my 2 pregnancies and had it removed after 16 months. I'm getting it again but we're undecided if we'll try for a third.

  • Has anyone had the nexplanon implant ?   That's what u was considering... Curious to hear experiences
  • I opted for the patch at the last minute. I didn't feel like dealing with the recovery of the IUD insertion, especially since we were going somewhere for the weekend.

I had the implant a couple of years ago. The convenience of not having to think about BC for 3 years was nice, but I ended up spotting frequently. Have you been on/had trouble with the shot? If so I wouldn't recommend the implant.

I did not have a good reaction to Mirena. Lots of cramping all month long. No sex drive. Had it taken out after a year. Is depo shot good while breastfeeding?

Yes my ob recommended it because I EBF and didn't want a daily pill.
  • I had Mirena placed at my 6 week appointment.  This is my first IUD, and I've been annoyed with the spotting.  I was so happy when my PP bleeding stopped.  Then, BAM, IUD spotting.  We do not need baby #4 anytime soon, so I guess I can just suck it up!
  • I had the Mirena put in at my postpartum appt and so far I haven't had much spotting. Before my first I had the Paragard IUD for 2 years but it made my cramps and bleeding miserable.

We we want to try for our second in slightly less than a year, but to me it seemed worth it to get the IUD even "short term"...I love not having to think about it!
  • I'll go with paragard since bc with hormones and me doesn't work and I didn't have any issue with it between DS and DD.

I had mirena put in about two weeks ago. I spotted for about a week and haven't since. So far I love it!

  • Vasectomy here! But we'll use condoms until dh can get to the urologist :)
  • Vasectomy here too!  Mini pill for me until Dh gets it done.  I am also lucky enough to not get my period while I breastfeed so I feel pretty confident in the nursing/mini pill combo for a while. We definitely do not want #5!

  • Doing the mini pill as well then will switch to the patch once I'm done nursing. Haven't had a period yet and postpartum spotting has stopped!
