Being induced today.. Advice?

I'm being induced in a few hours and I'm a nervous wreck. I can't sleep and I keep crying. FTM here. Any advice ??

  • You will be fine! I know it's surreal and crazy, but you will get thru it and will soon be in love with a beautiful brand new little person. There are so many compassionate, talented nurses out there that will take good care of you. I was induced with my first baby and most recently my twins. Both successful experiences! GL!

  • I had easy inductions with my two previous pregnancies.  Just try to relax and listen to the nurses and your OB.  It's such an exciting day for you- enjoy meeting your baby!

  • Thanks everyone!
  • You are STRONG and you can do this!! You almost have your LO in your arms! Keep telling yourself positive thoughts about your abilities and your strength and you will do great!

I know that eating before an induction is a good idea... but what kind of food? I was told I shouldn't eat anything too heavy, but what does that mean??? Does it even matter what I eat if they are ripening my cervix overnight and starting Pitocin in the morning?
  • @EErin86 re: food, probably because the cervix ripening sent me into active labor - no one could believe it! And I threw up a little. So don't eat anything you don't want to taste again :/

i didn't have my water broken but a friend told me that if they do break your water, ask for the epidural first (assuming you want one at all).

    Good luck!
  • You will do great!!! I'm a FTM and had a good experience being induced last week. I ate donuts and chocolate milk before going in... They said "light" but if I were to be laboring for hours, man was I wanting to start it off with a donut. If you don't have an overly sensitive stomach then I say eat whatever (I didn't throw up/get sick but as other PP's mentioned, you can).

So much this. They expected me to be in labor for 24 hours, so the nurse said she would look the other way if my husband wanted to get us dinner. The plan was at least 2 cervix ripeners over 8 hours and then pitocin since I wasn't dilated at all. 1 pill kicked my body into high gear, and everything I ate before dinner (chicken nuggets, of course) came out with every contraction. I was vomiting all over the place, and the anti nausea meds they were giving me in the IV did zero for me. On the other hand I only needed 1 pill and everything else was scraped. After delivery, I had to ask the nurse for something to help my heartburn from violently throwing up all night.

My recommendation is eat ice cream for dinner. :)
  • Good luck, hopefully it'll be quick and easy! I would suggest bringing lots of things to pass the time in case it takes awhile to get labor going, I was induced Friday morning but wasn't in labor until Sunday night so my bag of DVDs, puzzles and magazines was very helpful
  • I also went in on a Tuesday afternoon and didn't end up having my baby until almost 48 hours later. I had about 36 hours of cervix ripening where I watched movies, had visitors, played board games, and ate totally normal food. It wasn't until Thursday that the doctor started pitocin and labor didn't really kick in until they broke my water 4 hours before I delivered. Just try to relax and stay calm. That really helped me get through everything. Oh! If they offer you an ambien at night, do NOT hesitate to take that! Best night's sleep I have had in a looooong time.
  • How did it go???
