Hip displaysia?

Anyone have experience with hip displaysia?  When DD was born my pedi asked if DD was ever breech.  I said no and he said ok.  At 4 month checkup he said he likes to extra check girls' hips.  Asked again about breech, I said no and asked if something was wrong.  He said no.

Fast forward to 8 months old.  She hasn't been to the dr since 6 months and my husband took her to that appt so he remembers nothing (height, weight, etc).  DD sits up unassisted but pushes herself into a perfect split.  I guess I didn't find that weird until her teachers at school commented on it yesterday.  I googled "baby doing perfect split" and it brought up articles on this condition and listed a symptom as dragging one foot while crawling.  Which she also does.

So now I'm concerned.  I'm calling the pedi for an evaluation, but wanted to see if anyone had experience with this.

Re: Hip displaysia?

  • We are going to get a scan of Ava's hips soon to see what's happening.  She was physically checked three times (by midwife, doctor and well child nurse) before six weeks and all seemed ok.  As she's got older though the creases on each leg don't match up - she's got three creases on one leg she none on the other.

This is is just an indicator that her leg may not be sat in her hip socket as it should.  Only the most severe cases need treatment as a lot of babies grow out of it so to speak.

  • It's something that is very easily fixed.  As I understand, the main issue with hip displaysia is that it can contribute to osteoarthritis and back and hip problems when they are older.
  • I took her to the pedi tonight for an evaluation.  She also has uneven creases.  The doctor told me to fix her sitting position, ditch the baby carriers and exersaucer and just keep an eye on her crawling habits.  He advised me against an X-ray because they'd have to irradiate her ovaries, which he felt was not worth it and I agree.  So I will keep my eye on it for now.  Thanks for the info and support.
