Flying question

My grandpa just passes away and I will be buying my ticket my mom's and my two kids (well one kid the other is free) to attend the funeral. I can afford it but just barely, it's a shouldn't pay for it but have to do it anyway. I know airlines are understanding on giving deals when a loved ones passes but if they ask for proof I don't feel comfortable asking my grandma this soon.. what do they ask for? Are their cheaper airfare for loss of family?

Re: Flying question

  • In NZ (we only have two airlines) they need a death certificate.  I guess otherwise loads of people could take advantage.  Could you ask anyone other than your gma?

In MN they needed to know what the funeral home was and then they called and verified the details. Call and talk to the airlines because they have different rules for when you can book the flights, which flights you can take, ect

Also check fares online because sometimes you can get deals that are better than a bereavement fare

Missliz53 describes my experience with bereavement fares.

  • Airlines usually give you a 10% discount on the fare for bereavement.  A death notice (obituary) should be sufficient.  I am so sorry for your loss!  I lost my grandpa last month and it's never easy.  Hugs.
