Nueral Fold Issues?

I'm sorry if there was another place to post this...I didn't see anywhere else!

I had a 12-week ultrasound today (one every 4 weeks due to twin pregnancy), and Baby A's fold measured 2.8mm. (Baby B's was 1.6 I think)The Dr. said that this was on the high side of normal, so he had me do the genetic testing. This takes 10 days to come back...and I'm pretty much going to be a wreck the whole time.

Has anyone else had higher measurements in past pregnancies/this pregnancy? I'm trying not to freak myself out, so I am just wondering how others with similar situations turned out?

Re: Nueral Fold Issues?

  • Huh, I guess I just don't understand why they have "normal" measurements if they're still going to give you extra tests if you're within them.  My Dr said anything within 3mm is normal.  There have been a few women who have posted about high measurements and the general consensus is try not to worry until you have the test results back.  I know it's easier said than done, but deep breathes! Why worry about something that you don't know yet? (Again, so much easier said than done.) Keep us posted :)

I can't relate and don't have any advice. I just wanted to say I'm sorry you have to wait so long to hear back. Try to stay clam and positive. Hope you hear good news soon
  • I started crying before my 12 week appt in the ultrasound room because I was more scared of a false positive than anything actually being wrong. A false positive is not uncommon for the scan and although larger mm can hint at the chance of something, it's by no means diagnostic of a problem--the blood test is supposed to be more accurate. We were never told our mm, just that it looked normal. I found this on baby center uk though and hope it's helpful:

"An NT of less than 3.5mm is considered normal when your baby measures between 45mm (1.8in) and 84mm (3.3in). The NT normally grows in proportion with your baby. Some babies without Down's have increased fluid, too. Nine out of 10 babies with a measurement between 2.5mm and 3.5mm will be completely fine."

  • Thank you everyone! I've been trying to avoid research on Dr. Google, so thank you for posting positive statistics. I'm just trying to keep positive and know that the odds are in my favor, and that whatever happens we will be okay! I've honestly been so worried about vanishing twin syndrome that genetic abnormalities didn't even cross my mind, which is odd since my sister has T21! Thank you all again!

  • That's great news @Kimmykins143 !!
  • @Kimmykins143 happy to hear your results! We just went through this too and got normal results back today! It is so scary. Are they doing anything specific to check for heart issues with baby a? I was emailed my results but haven't talked to my OB and am wondering if she will do a fetal echocardiograph or just wait until 20 weeks.

  • Yay!!!! So happy for you all!!!! Now go enjoy the pregnancy and let all the stress just fall away!!!
  • @blessdtxas they said they would take a close look at my 16 week ultrasound, and again at my 20 week anatomy scan. If they see anything abnormal they said I would be sent to a specialist. So sorry you went through that as well! I'm a big fan of modern medical advances, so glad to have an almost definitive answer!
