Re: Weekly Appointments 5.16-5.22

  • We finally have our first ever appointment for this pregnancy on the 20th! I am 10+5 weeks today and the waiting has been absolutely killer. So ready to see our baby for the first time!

  • Had an NT scan this morning. Everything looked good but the Dr. is a DB. He said since it looked good this time he won't be giving me the 2nd portion of the screen which is such BS because they look at different things at these screens. Trying to get my OB to give me a script for the NIPT test.

  • I had my NT scan and everything looked good! Baby was bouncing around.  I kept laughing because it was so funny to see but not feel it.  I'm sure I was driving the tech crazy.

@juliehollz13 - that's so strange.  They offered us the standard blood test or the NIPT and we got the standard test, but you should've had some bloodwork.  They obviously can't calculate your risk without the bloodwork.

@penelope4612 i did get some type of blood work but not for the NIPT screen. Since the nuchal translucency was under 2mm he was just very dismissive. He just told me I wouldn't be coming back, which i thought was very presumptuous as it's still very early and they still need to look at the nuchal fold. I messaged my OB about it and asked him about it so I hope he lets me do the NIPT screen, since I'm paying out of pocket for it so it should be my choice.

  • @juliehollz13 - oh ok.  You probably got what I got.  They said they'd call next week with the risk ratio for how likely the baby is to have a genetic abnormality.  They encouraged me to wait until I have that info to decide on the NIPT or not bc the NIPT is out of pocket.

@penelope4612 see that's what ticked me off even more. How can you say I won't be getting a 2nd scan if my bloodwork hasn't come back yet? smh.

  • @juliehollz13 - yeah I mean it would be pretty crappy if the doctor reassured you everything was fine and everything wasn't.  You'd think they'd be more careful.  I know of people (in Internet land, not in real life) who have had the first trimester screen come back as very low risk and still had a baby with DS.  Also the genetics counsellor said the NT scan is really more sensitive for DS but the bloodwork gives a better indication of other genetic abnormalities.

@penelope4612 on top of that the NT scan is only up to 85% accurate. So why wouldn't you give your patients the OPTION to do the NIPT scan. It doesn't cost you anything and all it takes is for you to write the order for it. The NT scan does look at all other kinds of issues, but if you had a way of ruling out the chromosomal issues why would you raise such a stink about it? ugh.

  • @juliehollz13 Yeah, the NT can be more sensitive but not always in the best way. When my mom was pregnant with my sister, she had the NT done and she had something like 4 out of 6 markers positive for DS. So my mom thought the whole time she was pregnant that my sister would have DS. She was born without DS. I think the technology is better now so hopefully there aren't as many false positives, but modern medicine is still prone to flaws. I would say that you really need to push your doctor to let you have the testing done that you feel more comfortable with.
  • Finally have my first appointment Wednesday, should be able to get to see number five finally! I'm 10 weeks and 3 days.

I also made an appointment to meet with a midwife about getting information about doing a home birth. My insurance won't cover it, but I don't care, it's a choice that I think we wouldn't regret.

  • @tlszoltysik - my best friend wanted a home birth but her insurance didn't cover it.  She ended up going to an independent birthing center that had a more natural/holistic approach and loved her choice.  I think she paid $600-$800 to do the full thing at her facility.  It's not quite a home birth, but it was intervention free with many of the same things they'd use in a home birth.  Just wanted to offer it as a suggestion in the event you learn the home birth is out of budget.

  • back from my intake appointment today. I still don't know for sure if there is anything actually growing inside of me, met with the midwife and she didn't even attempt the Doppler.  but I don't have to wait too long, dating u/s is scheduled for next Friday!  turns out I will not be getting an NT scan, but they will go ahead and draw blood for NIPT next week as well, so we will be finding out the gender early :) they offer the panorama test at my OB.
I got a Rx for Zofran, so hopefully I am able to keep food down in the coming days, and I also learned that I have a tilted uterus, something one would think I would have been told about at some point during my previous two pregnancies, especially since I had such severe back pain this last one.  now I know that I might as well expect back labor again.  yay.
  • I had my first OB appointment today, even though I already had an u/s last week (I got pregnant after transitioning off Depo. When I found out I was pregnant we had to immediately go in for a blood hcg test and as u/s to find out how far along I was)

Everything looks great, I'm officially 8 weeks 2 days, due date is Christmas Eve!!!
  • Update: So I guess I over reacted because the Dr. was just so uninformative. My OB said that what what the Dr. MEANT (but obviously didn't say), is that they will not be performing the 2nd portion at the Maternal Fetal Medicine office since the 1st scan was normal, but at my OB's office between 15-18 weeks. I still asked to do the NIPT test because I want to know sooner rather than later if the baby has any chromosomal issues. + finding out the gender will be cool.

  • Had my first appointment today! I was so nervous - I just wanted confirmation that something was really in there. Seeing the baby through ultrasound was insane, just unbelievable to think it's really in there... And it was moving around like crazy! So far, so good - just gotta wait for blood results to come back with hopefully everything looking good.
  • Every appointment I have makes me feel less anxious and more excited. Just did a quick check in and heard the heartbeat again via doppler. Found out I will not get an NT scan either, but will have NIPT at the lab next week. And some other blood test at 15 weeks that I'd have to look at the paper to remember. OB also told me to let her know if more frequent appointments would help my anxieties, just hearing it made me feel better.

I had my 8 week appointment yesterday and all went great. The baby is growing righy on track 8 w 1 d. We saw the heart flickering and it was 174 bpm! We even saw it move on the ultrasound! It is amazing thinking the baby is not even an inch long and you can still see it moving around! I never saw that this early with our first. I can't wait to heat the heartbeat in 4 weeks!

  • @lisa3379 I hear ya!

My first appointment was today and I was so nervous going it. I am having serious impostor syndrome. I am so paranoid that I'm not really pregnant and that I am some kind of idiot who can't figure it out. No u/s today, sadly. My midwifery only does them once per week, on Tuesdays. Our dating u/s is May 31!! Can't wait!!

  • 8 week check today. My OB thought she would try a trans abdominal u/s and all she could find was a blur looking like the outline of the baby... Womp womp. Old machine and just too early. Just had a transvaginal one done on Saturday with a much newer machine and it showed a healthy baby with a HB, so I'm not worried. HCG levels were good. Planning on a NT and bloodwork soon.

Had an ultrasound this morning. Baby is looking like a perfect little gummy bear and measuring at 9 weeks, 3 days. Heartbeat was perfect at 174. The tech was nice enough to let us watch him/her moving around. I am ecstatic and so relieved. I'll put pictures on the u/s thread later but for now I had to tell someone!!!!

ETA: Not sure if they'll switch my due date from 12/21 to 12/19 since he/she is measuring ahead, but we'll see. I personally think it should be 12/19 based on O date but who knows. :)

  • Got a new due date at my check-in -- instead of 12/22, it's now 12/14 (although ultrasound measured it at 12/18, but since it's within +/- one week, they went with the first day of my period as a date). I think I'm going to be changing my ob/gyn though... even though they delivered my first child, there were a couple of things that were wonky enough (plus two of the providers I liked left) that I'm switching practices.
  • Wasn't planning to have an appointment this week, but since I have had some numbness on the left side of my face all morning I am now being seen at 1:15. I called the OBGYN cause it was a weird deal and the nurse said they would see me for it. Hoping that while I am there I also get to here baby's heartbeat!

  • So we just got our US done and we are just waiting to see the OB! Our beautiful little baby has a heart rate of 164 and it was so squirmy that it was hard to get a really clear picture. Baby was just waving and kicking all over the place! I cried so hard at seeing baby for the first time. It's truly surreal.

Had my 10 week appointment with all the many, many blood vials drawn. Can't wait for the MaterniT21 test results. They said 7-10 days, but it took a bit longer with my son. Ultrasound will be on June 1(supposed to be a few days earlier, but they book up quickly). Heartbeat was 171:) Due date 12/12, but my doctor said she won't let me go past 12/5 as my first came 9 days early all on his own, and he was almost 9 pounds----a bit much for my 5'2 frame. Excited for baby number 2!
