Planned c-section??

I know its early, but I want to choose my dr carefully based on this decision!! I progressed with my daughter to 10 cm pretty quickly... but then I had to push for 3 hours. I was made to feel bad about finally calling in the dr by my midwife and when the dr finally came I had to have an emergency c section from complications with the baby but mainly because she was stuck. I ended up having so much medication that I just passed out and missed the birth and first few hours. At first I was just glad she was healthy, but now im torn. My dr said I should just plan a csection bc he thinks my pelvis is too small to deliver naturally. I want to try a vbac, but worry id just end up with another emergency like he seems to think. My daughter was only 8 lbs 13 ozs, which is exactly what my older brother weighed, andthen I was 10 lbs at birth, so if I take after my mom my baby will only be bigger anyway. What would you do? Try vbac or schedule c section?

If I do go ahead with the c section, ive heard of "gentle  c sections" which are supposed to be closer to a natural delivery... anybody have experience with that???

Re: Planned c-section??

  • I had to do an emergency c section with my first.   we are planning on having one with this one.  i actually moved states and this hospital has a room where the mom recovers and can see the baby right away.   I hated waiting in the recovery knowing that she was up there and i was laying around.   maybe since it will be planned, you won't be knocked out as much?

  • I basically had the EXACT situation as you.  Progressed fine but pushed for hours and bc of head positioning, ended up with a CS.  I scheduled a RCS with DD2 based on doctor suggestion, but ended up in labor before the date and EASILY had a successful VBAC.  I will say the VBAC experience was amazing, and I would have been happy I tried it even if it had not been successful.  DDs were 8#8 and 7#14

  • I've never heard of a "gentle c-section" I just wanted to chime in- DD2 was a scheduled section from the beginning for similar reasons. I was in labor for over 60hrs with DD1 (induction) got to 10cm and pushed for about 3hrs, she just wasn't budging. She was OP, and they can be delivered vaginally of course, but tend to be more difficult and often just have a harder time descending.

Well my water broke at midnight, two days before my RCS. I ended up have an amazing VBAC that was basically pain-med free since by the time they put my epidural in, I was already 10cms and pushing. The Dr didn't even have a chance to turn on meds (go figure) So don't give up hope entirely! Schedule your RCS and keep an open mind!

I had a similar situation. I was induced and there was no progression after 24 hours so they decided it would be best to do a c-section. Well my epidural wasn't as strong as I think some may be. I could feel a lot of pinching. The game me some IV Meds. I don't remember anything from the night my son was born except the first time I saw him. The rest was a blurr. That's part of my hesitation with having another c-section.  My goal this time is to attempt a natural birth.
  • I had a planned c-section with my first due to the position of my son.  It was fabulous.  I was under heated balloons and blankets, I have never felt so comfortable.  I will have another one in Jan.

  • I have had two c-sections now. My first was for similar reasons as your's in that baby got stuck. He turned his head at the last minute into a position that wouldn't allow him to come down the birth canal any further. For our second, the doctor was supportive and encouraging of attempting a VBAC, but hubby and I were too nervous. I already knew what to expect, and frankly did not want to go through labor and pushing again, only to have to recover from an attempted natural delivery and a c-section delivery all over again.

We scheduled our second c-section at my 36 week appointment, and went in at 39 weeks, 1 day to have her. The process was easy. I felt absolutely nothing from my spinal block (Numb from the breasts, down). I was able to be baby shortly after delivery.

We are expecting baby #3 now, and a c-section isn't even questioned for us.

Good luck to you! I can honestly say that when c-sections are planned, it is so much more of a good experience.

Thanks for the input y'all. Baby got stuck but not because of position. My dr said if it has been position or something specific to that one pregnancy, he would suggest vbac, but she was stuck BC my pelvis was too small. Her head was right there and they tried to get her out with forceps but she got distressed. He said there was no way she was coming out and that I most likely wouldn't grow more. That's why I don't know if it's worth it to try a vbac. I don't want to go through all that again just to have an emergency again. I guess I'll be going with the c section :/

I'm debating this too. I think I'm going to schedule a rcs for 41 weeks and hope that I go into labour? My mom's pelvis was too narrow and she had 3 CS. They didn't tell me that mine is narrow but my 10lber was sunny side and chin up so her head never engaged after a 24 hour induction so I wound up with a CS.

I was in the same boat as many of you ladies He was OP but got super stuck and after pushing for hours hadn't budged an inch. I ended up with an emergency c-section where the epidural didn't work and a very stuck baby. They had a hard time getting him out and then they had to fix a couple things. I don't remember much after they pulled him out, just a few minutes in the recovery area then nothing until the next morning. I am pretty scared about the birthing process because I am terrified the epidural won't work again. But I know my Dr will reccomend a rcs because of what happened last time and adhesions. But DS was 3 1/2 weeks early at 6lbs (water broke at home) and he still didn't fit so I don't think I have much choice.

  • July 2016 here. I had the same issues with my first, but she was 6 #s. I am not eligible for a VBAC.

My 2nd C/S was amazing and NOTHING like my first. I was awake and  alert and I held m child right away.

A schedule C/S is so much calmer and it was a happy occasion.

My first pregnancy was a lot like yours, only our OB told us at my 36wk  appointment that she thought my pelvis was too small and I should just schedule a CS right then...we requested a TOL and we're induced. Labored fine to 10cm but here is where our stories differ, she only let me push for like 20min before saying he wasn't coming out so we had the CS.

Boy #2 I got a new OB and tried for a VBAC, unfortunately my OB was on vacation when I went into labor and the on call OB was not willing to allow me to do squat pushing like my OB and I discussed, because squatting can open the pelvis up to 30% more than the traditional laying on back. So, after about 1.5hrs of pushing (not counting the regression from 10 cm back to an 8) the OB pushed us for another CS

Now, the fun part of my story lol. My OB retired, so I had to swap OB again with #3 lol. He was supportive of VBA2C so I went into labor a day after my due date and progressed super quickly, pushed for 2hrs and delivered my sunny side up 6lb 12oz boy naturally. I can't say enough about how healing his birth was.

With #4 we went with the same OB and I started labor at 36wk in the hospital, I was in for a urine catch due to protein in my urine at my appointment that day. Labor started at 9:30pm and he was born a bit after 1am in like 2 pushes! He was 6lb 2oz, Super close to #3 but he was in the correct position and just slid out.

I'm sorry that was super long, I love to share my experience with others because I want to encourage VBAC where it's desired! If you want to go with a VBAC I would recommend finding a new supportive OB. I truly believe I could have delivered my first two 8lb babies if I had been given the time and different pushing positions.

@BecauseBabyIamAPugIt's great to hear that a planned one can be happier lol

@mommywesley it's also great to hear that changing positions might make it possible.. I'm staying with the same office, but seeing a different ob (the old ob did a great job for the position I was in, but I didn't see him during my pregnancy and was shocked when he was called to do my c section BC he was an ex boyfriends dad!) I'm anxious to see what my new Dr will say about this go around.
