Bottled breast milk..3 week old how much to give?

How many ounces of pumped breastmilk should I be feeding my 3 week old?

I gave Ollie is first bottle of pumped milk when he was 3 and a half weeks old. I pumped with a manual pump for about 10 minutes (about the same amount of time he would normally eat) and got 5 ounces. So I gave him that and he drank it all....I'm thinking it's a lot but it was around the time of his last feed so he usually eats more I think, before doing a long stretch of sleep. I think some of his meals are smaller for sure...like 2-3 ounces.

Depends on how often your LO eats. The average is between 1.5-3 I believe. We have been bottle feeding pumped milk since week 1 and it always changes. The more frequent he feeds the fewer the oz each time. LO is going to be a month soon and averaging 4 oz but I think that's due to a growth spurt.
  • I was always told 2oz every 2-3 hours. We still only give LO that at 5 weeks except it's usually 3oz if we do the 3 hour stretch. A few times she would cry for more but we try to soothe her in other ways first before giving her more.
  • Our pedi said a general rule is an oz per hour since last feeding. That's been basically working for us.
  • My pediatrician said it's usually an ounce per week of life, but varies based on weight and how long it's been since you fed them last.

So if you're 3 weeks but feeding every 1-2 hours, you can be a little under 3 oz. If you're around 3-4 hours between feedings, you can go to 4-5.
  • Peds don't always know breastfeeding info..... unlike formula it doesn't matter the age...
It 1 ounce per 1 hr... this is the perfect ratio for bf babies
  • I would start with 2 and see how that goes. My LO never really bottle feeds more than that in a sitting. And it sucks having to toss it, so I feed a little and get more if needed.

Out LO is eating mostly 4 oz at 4 weeks. They will just spit it back at you if it's too much
  • My LO drinks a little over 4oz so we usually prepare a bottle for about 5oz and he is 10 weeks.

My LO is about 6 weeks has 3 oz every 3 hours. DH gives her a bottle a day.
sometimes if it's not enough she lets is know and I nurse her for a few min after until she pulls away. I'd say those times she gets maybe 3 1/2 .
