Nipple shield help

just wondering if anybody has been using a nipple shield and successfully weaned off. We started using one probably day 3 in the hospital and kind of wish we never started. I was only having issues getting her to latch on one side and the nurse suggested it. It has worked well so far but I am getting so sick of lugging them around. Plus our dog started chewing them if I forget to put it up, and those things are expensive! A few questions, any advice on getting her to wean, I have read all the kellymom advice.
She seems to be gulping more when I do try- is this normal? I know I have a pretty forceful letdown.
The few times I have tried without she does okay, popping off a few times but does seem to nurse for less time than with the shield, maybe she is just getting milk easier?
I would love to get her off but if it's the only way we can nurse I'm okay with that too. Any long term success stories with using a nipple shield?

My LO is one month today and we've been working on this for the last week and a half.  She nurses longer now without the shield, but that could be because she stays latched on now, unlike the shield where she could slide around.  I haven't noticed a difference in gulping.  She's getting the hang of it, and I only give in and use the shield sometimes when she's getting frustrated trying to latch in the middle of the night.

  • I used one with DS for 2.5 years. My anatomy didn't work with his so it was the only way we were successful. I kept spare shields around in my purse, car, nightstand etc. I used one with DD when my milk came in & I was too engorged to get her to latch. We've pretty much weaned off of it now at 3 weeks.

Just keep at it! She will get used to it and adjust. Many mom's have forceful let downs where baby gulps especially when they're this young but it gets better. If she's latching without the shield I'd just keep nursing without and you'll all adjust. That's exactly what we did with DS1. Wouldn't latch at all and the shield allowed for breastfeeding early on...by week three where wed try every session to nurse without we finally got a hang of it and we never looked back! Good luck!!!

  • I'm wondering this too. My son is 7 months and were still using it. He will latch on my left side without it fine but on my right side he gags before he can even get milk. I don't know how to solve this and think I'm doomed to the sheild forever.
  • How do you ladies deal with the shield when nursing in public? I always bring bottles of pumped milk when we go out because it seems like the shield would be such a hassle when we're out and about.

We are having some good luck weaning off of it this week! It's been a learning curve for both of us again but doing well still! Taking the shield off part way through the feed seemed to help her latch better!  We always took pumped milk in bottles when out and about! I felt like using the shield was way too difficult to even try in public ! Honestly I think I probably will continue that for the most part!
