Used pack n play- opinions please

My MIL is super pumped about the used pack n play she bought at a yard sale. I haven't seen it yet but tbh, I don't think I love the idea. Used baby stuff with hard, washable surfaces.... I'm all in! But this has soft surfaces where who knows what could be living. Am I being a crazy person?

Re: Used pack n play- opinions please

  • You can call the manufacturer and get a replacement bottom if you are worried about the quality or cleanliness of the sleeping surface. Usually the edges are easy to spot clean with some gentle soap. I understand being wary. If anything you can make sure that your mom uses a fitted sheet every time. I would go ahead and see if you can order the mattress part.

Locate the model number on the PnP. You should be able to order the bottom (foldable) portion:

You can also buy approved sheets through graco if you really want (to make sure they fit properly and are not loose).

Meh....I would see what it looks like before you have a freak out. You can wipe it off with a wet cloth but remember, moisture has to be present for living critters to survive. If there is no mold or no musty smell, it's prob fine. You are going to cover the mattress with a sheet anyways.

Also, that PNP can be designated to stay at MILs house. You can always get a new one for your house.

  • I am a total germ freak when it comes to babies.  I've seen tons of used stuff that is adorable, but unless it is coming from someone I know, I just can't have it in my house.  You gotta do what you are comfortable with.  I'm sure your MIL would understand if you just politely told her you were uncomfortable with the idea because of the soft surfaces.

    Good luck!

  • @klv That is a great idea!  Keep it at her MIL's house!  I second that!

  • Idk why but with my first I was totally with you, the only used thing I had was a crib which I wiped down. This time though, I totally don't care if stuff is used. I will clean what is washable, and I'm otherwise good to go.
I don't do day care (except at the gym) but if you plan to- you have to realize that there's tons of stuff they're going to be in contact with that isn't perfectly clean. Even with US standards and regulations etc.
Still, go with your gut (and budget).
  • I'm a germ freak too, but I pressure washed our used one and didn't worry. Then left it in the sun to dry. The UV will kill anything, so unless it's got major funky stuff I would use it.

  • Our pack and play bottom is like a covered board that can be wiped down (it's a graco). It cannot be thrown in the wash like many baby items. If it can't be put in a washing machine I'm not using it used. Something that can be taken 100% apart and sanitized I would be ok with.

  • We buy a lot of our baby stuff used. (In good condition)

The way I see it, a lot of it will only be used for such a short time! I agree with PP to wash it and let it dry in the sun. The material it's made of is made to be easily cleaned. You will also be putting a flat sheet over it. I wouldn't worry too much!

I failed to mention, that was the purpose of the purchase, for them to have at their house... But if I'm not comfortable putting her in it at my house, using it somewhere else doesn't make sense to me.

Buying a new mattress to go in there is a small compromise though. I'm not someone who feels like my baby should be in a bubble, but I just don't know enough to KNOW that no serious diseases/bugs/germs couldn't live in that thing. That said, I really appreciate all the feedback!!

I used to run a day care.  I would spray them with an antibacterial spray, (bleach or Lysol mixture), then air dry them outside. Make sure the mixture isn't too strong & that it completely dries before putting the sheet on.

  • I don't see an issue with it as long as it is in really good condition. Wipe it down the best you can and put it in the sun for a day, then use clean sheets. Viruses and bacteria that are harmful to humans (cold viruses, etc) do not survive on such surfaces for more than a day or two. It is perfectly safe.

  • If it's is EUC condition, I would just use an anti-bacterial cleaner to wipe it down. I'm a stickler when it comes to baby gear. I won't use a used car seat or a used crib. I would use a PNP as long as it was clean and came from a smoke free and pet free home.

A new mattress is a good compromise. I also agree with the above as far as car seats - idc how much I trust a friend or family member, the car seat must be brand new. Not that you asked, but since babies I have had more interest in natural cleaners, and this is one that I use on surfaces that are touched by babies lots:

Not that you'd want them to eat it, but I feel better about using it than something with other kinds of disnfecting chemicals. Hydrogen peroxide is great too, as it denatures into water.
