Infant Carrier

I just started baby wearing with my fourth baby (and I totally wish I would've done this a few kids ago). I have an Ergo with the infant insert and I LOVE it. However, I feel like it's a bit bulky for certain things (like just wearing her around the house or to church to keep my hands free for seperating the other three kids). I have my eye on the Infantino Mei Tai carrier, but I've never heard anyone talk about it. Any reviews for this carrier or suggestions for another affordable lightweight option?

Re: Infant Carrier

  • I find that the ergo is better for 16lbs and up. I use my Moby until then, but it's not as gentle on my back.

  • I have the Baby Bjorn. Haven't tried any others, but love this one.
  • I don't have experience with the infantino one but I bought a Maya ring sling and I absolutely LOVE it.

I have the infantino Mei Tei and LOVE IT!!!  I just had a Bjorn with my first (didn't know much about baby wearing) and love this one.  It's awesome for the price and I have zero problems. I wear him in most stores, and he passes right out.
  • I have the K'tan and I like it.
  • I have heard great things about the infantino. I have a ring sling, k'tan, and a Beco Gemini.

  • We love our Infantino Mei Tei! It's soooo easy to use and LO loves it. I love that DH and I can both use it without worrying about different sizes. It's great and so economical!
  • I have the ktan but dont care for it. I recently bought an Infantino 4 position carrier and I like it much better. It doesnt strain my back and LO is much better supported in it.
  • I have the ring sling and love it. Depending on the mood he's in, I can put him in there in different ways and he's happy.

  • Right now I like the k'tan or a ring sling. My kinderpack is my favorite for when they are bigger.
  • I have a bit of a baby wearing apparatus addiction.  :#

    I have..
2 Tula SSCs, an Ergo SSC, a Tula ring sling, a Moby, and a MiaMily SSC.

So far, all I've used are the Tula SSC and RS. I love the ease and support of the ring sling for being teeny tiny. She's still a bit small for the Tula with insert.

Design wise, the Tula is my favorite SSC for function and looks. They retain resale value well too, if that's your thing.

Im looking into getting a Fidella FlyTai. It's a MeiTai style carrier made from a woven wrap. I really want to try it. Zero self control over here.
  • @cmjenkies If you have a babywearing international chapter near you, you can join and rent out carriers from their lending library. I definitely want to try the flytai, and I know I can't justify a fourth baby carrying contraption.

I'm weak, I bought one tonight from their main site. Free international shipping - ended up being 108 USD. I'm self-grounded from online shopping now. I'll let you know how it is once it gets here!  :#:p

I have a hot sling and I'm not liking it, baby boy is almost 10 lbs and the cradle carry is way too tight. I like how easy it is to use. Any good easy to use carriers? Not a fan of the front backpack looking ones.

I just tried it today and loved it!
  • I have the ergo and I agree it is too cumbersome at this point with the infant insert and all the buckles. I also have the money which I love. But I had to put it on in the rain one day and it was hard not to get the ends wet. I found the infantino unison at Tj maxx and it is my new go to!  I love it. Takes up less room in the bag than the moby and it super quick to put on. And super light weight.  You can wear it outward facing when baby is big enough too.

What's a good option to throw on when heading in to the grocery store? We have a moby and an ergo but I feel like both are too complicated to try and put on when at the store

I have used the moby at the grocery store before, I liked it because I knew LO was so snuggly and would likely sleep for me. All I did was wrap it and tie it at home and then wore it empty in the car on the ride to the store- so that way all the confusing part was done, all I had to do was slip baby in when we got there!

This time around I have a ring sling too and it seems like it will be simple for those kinds of outings, though I haven't tried yet.

  • I have the boba wrap and love it. LO seems to be really cozy in it too. He always falls asleep 5 min into a walk.
  • I have used our ring sling for grocery shopping multiple times and it is a life saver!

I never thought about just tying my moby before we go! Duh ! That would be perfect
  • CatBirdBaby Pikkolo and the Beco Gemini also do not need an insert and are SSCs.

I I love my Ring Sling for fast ups for in and out of the house/store.  I love my Mei Tai for its stuffier but versatility.   Your most versitile carrier is going to be a woven wrap which has a bit of a learning curve but worth learning.

  • The moby is great for multiple errands cause you can put it on early and keep it on.

This may be a dumb question, but is it possible for the baby to fall out of a ring sling?
  • DD loves the boba wrap
I have only used it around tho house but it's nice to get the chores done and know baby is close and safe . It puts her to sleep most of the time

I have the k'tan and the Lillebaby all seasons carrier for its back support
  • I have the K'tan too. I got the Baby Kt'an Breeze, to minimize overheating.

It's so easy to use, and there's many positions you can put the baby in. My baby falls asleep within a few minutes when she's in it.

I like it a lot, now that I have the right size. I started with size small, but switched to the xsmall and it holds baby much better. If you get the K'tan I would recommend getting a size smaller than you think you need.

The only down side is that it strains my back a bit because I have TERRIBLE posture and no more ab muscles. I'm hoping carrying her around will help with both of those issues.

You just want to make sure you've got baby in a good seat. If it's worn properly, you should be fine!

We wore ours to a tball game and Target today and it was wonderful.

I have the ktan and just bought an infantino the other day. The ktan wasnt working out, LO didnt like it and it killed my back. It was easy to get him in and out if it though. The infantino was a spur of the moment buy, I researched and decided on the ergo 360 4 position, the cool airb with mesh. But it is on backorder from the manufacturer so I cant buy it anywhere till at least June. I want the breathable one because it has a buckle fastener around the waist and the regular 360 has a Velcro and I believe doesnt offer forward facing? Well the infantino works great and was only $30 but I dont know if it is ergo friendly on his legs/hips? I had him init yesterday and it looked like his legs were straight and not supported, like he was being held up by his crotch instead of in a sitting position, plus its hot here! It was 96 deg yesterday! So Im thinking I will still buy the ergo once its available again. I wish stores would let you try carriers on with baby so you can try it out before wasting money.
  • @loveymay Lillebaby and Tula both have mesh carrier options as well. Narrow seats aren't ergonomic because they don't hold baby knee to knee, but they will not *cause* hip dysplasia, although they can exasperate preexisting hip conditions. I'm personally not a fan of forward facing infants in carriers at all. I'd wait til they can safely be back carried then go that route instead.

See if you have a local baby wearing lending library so you can try things on.
