Active little boy!

I had a feeling DS was going to be a very active infant even when I was pregnant with him. He thrashes his arms and kicks his legs all day long! It's pretty cute during the day, but it makes him tough to put down at night. I've discovered the Miracle Blanket, which has helped him sleep 3+ hours at night (he would wake every 90 minutes previously!), but he still has a hard time drifting off to sleep for the night without waking himself as he falls asleep. He just wants to kick so bad he can't stay still enough to fall asleep! Does anyone have any suggestions for calming a very active baby? As it stands it's been taking me about an hour to 90 minutes of laying with him for him to fall asleep.

  • My son used to suckle on his bottle and not actually drink, and my husband came up with "baby boot camp" which makes him tired and hungry. He puts him on his chest for tummy time and makes him squirm his way up, then stands him up and has him supporting his own weight for little bits of time, does bicycle kicks, and other little "baby friendly" exercises to wear him out and make him hungry. Maybe that would also work to make him sleepy?

  • That might work! I'll definitely try that tonight!

Does swaddling him help at all? If we don't swaddle his arms and legs keep him from getting to sleep or even wake him up.

  • I use the miracle blanket but he thrashes his legs still. I wonder it they make baby straight jackets, haha!
  • You really can't restrict his legs more than a typical swaddle allows. It hinders the natural development for babies. They need to be able to bring their legs up the way they would have them in utero since that's the way the bones currently go. I wish I could say otherwise because I can imagine that's tiring and frustrating :(

  • Giving a bath at night right before bedtime helps C sleep well sometimes.

Also, we used merlins Magic sleep suit with DS1 for awhile because he would constantly punch himself in the face and wake up. We transitioned him to a sleep sack after that and it worked well. However it'll be a while before you can use the sleep suit.
  • Maybe try swaddling him and letting him sleep in a rock and play?  My LO is very squirmy too, we have to swaddle him at night and switch back and forth from laying him in his bassinet or his RnP. I think he feels more secure in the RnP and it helps with how much he thrashes about.
