Baby has 101.0 temp...advice please??

My LO has had a crazy nose run for two days, BUT this is the first time he has ever had a fever and being absolutely miserable acting. At bedtime he started feeling hot to the touch. Sure enough it's 101.0 Gave a little Tylenol. Just not sure what to do if it gets worse over night?

When LO he was an infant 100.0 and less was considered 'normal'. Is that still the case?? I tried to get an appointment today but of course today(Thursday) was the day the doctors office closed at half day. Ugh. And that was BEFORE the fever because I could tell he was off. I'm thinking ear infection. :( He's so sad and miserable! Such a helpless feeling. What is considered normal temp wise for an 8 month old??

  • I'd probably think ear infection, too.  But it's hard to say.  I don't know specifically what temp to start worrying but as far as bona fide emergencies go, fussy and sad is better than lethargic and unresponsive.

If his temp doesn't go down in the next few hours I might think about taking him to urgent care if I were especially worried.  Should get better with the Tylenol but definitely check on him regularly.  Sometimes it helps to take them outside in the cool air for a little while at night time, depending on the climate where you live.

  • The best advice Ive heard is 'treat the child, not the number'. There isn't a degree of fever that suddenly needs different treatment. If fever is the main worry, I take them in if tylenol alternating with Advil won't bring it down. If the fever goes down but bounces back up, I bring them in after 3 days of that. Usually there are other symptoms that would be more worrying by then. Acting miserable is to be expected, lethargy that doesn't improve when the fever comes down needs a Dr. If it's an ear infection little usually pull at their ears or run the sides of their head. I'm in Canada, so 37 C and under is normal, under 38 C is low grade, over 38 C I treat and monitor regularly. If it gets over 39.1 C within 3 hours of giving tylenol and I give Advil and it doesn't work-then it's a higher triage level at ER, so I would just go to be safe.

  • My pediatrician said alot of what @ForeverEverAfter said. Treat the child. If they are miserable and uncomfortable give them motrin. My Lo had almost a 102 about a month ago and we did not give motrin except at night because I was uncomfortable leaving him along in crib where I wouldnt be checking if his temp soared. That time his fever was all over the place 99.8 then 101.3 then 101.9 then no fever it was strange and all that without medicine. My Pediatrician said even up to 105 was not something to be too worried about. If you give motrin and nothing happens then it could be bacterial and then you would need to get into the dr. Also a fever for 3 days i would go in as well just in case. My pediatrician also said that a fever is there for a reason it is fighting something and using motrin to stop it can cause the baby to have the cold longer because the fighting power of the body is being hindered by the motrin.
  • Thank you! His temp never went higher than 102.2. He isn't running hot today at all. He's still crazy fussy so he must be cutting a tooth. I called the doctor and talked to his nurse. They said to just keep an eye on him and make sure he's giving wet diapers and drinking his formula, which he is. His first two teeth he cut no issues really, so this surprised me!
  • My first guys teeth he had a big fever diarhea drooling etc this last week he has been cutting 3! but no symptoms except some fussiness. it is very strange
