After what has felt like Earth's longest induction, my baby girl is finally here! We induced at 39 weeks because of polyhydramnios (too much amniotic fluid), and I was very nervous that my body would not handle it well because my cervix was totally not progressed at all.
We went in on Monday evening and started a 12 hour dose of cervidil. Took an ambien and got a couple hours of sleep despite baby girl constantly rolling away from the monitors. Woke up Monday morning, my midwife realized that the nurse hadn't inserted the strip deep enough (my cervix was VERY high) and it had done absolutely nothing. Pretty discouraging. Inserted another 12 hour dose around 11:00 am, and spent basically the whole day walking around the hospital and watching call the
midwife while my husband worked (thank goodness for fast hospital wi-fi!). Had contractions all day about 10-15 minutes apart, intense but not horrible.
At about midnight my midwife took out the cervidil and I was at a 3, 50% effaced and station 0. Not great for almost 30 hours into an induction, but at least something was happening. She suggested I take another ambien and put me on a super low dose of pitocin (like a 2) so I could get a few hours of sleep without losing my contraction pattern. Slept very poorly between contractions. It became very clear overnight that she was still posterior, because I was definitely having early back labor.
At around 6:30 they put the pitocin up to a 6 and broke my water and the contractions got very serious very fast. 2 minutes apart, a minute long, and felt like they were shattering my spine and hips. My midwife was great, super hands on for a CNM, and she helped me with counter pressure while my husband ran me a bath (thank god for hospital rooms with big tubs!). I labored in and out of the tub for 4 hours, and it was absolutely horrifying. The tub helped for sure, but back labor is just a completely different beast than what I felt with my first. Finally around 11 I just decided that despite my epidural fears this was not gonna be a med-free birth. I was at a 6 at this point, so at least I wasn't too worried about my labor stalling out. They got it up and running a little before noon, and the anesthesiologist was awesome! He listened to my fears about feeling numb and put the meds at half strength, so I'd still be able to labor in different positions and feel when I was contracting.
I labored with the epi for about 2.5 hours, still having to breathe and moan thru contractions but no longer feeling like I was going to snap in half. Around 2:30 I started to feel rectal pressure but didn't have that "pushy" feeling yet. My midwife was doing clinic hours across the street but she said on the phone I should just labor down for a while and call her back if I started to feel like pushing. After an hour of laboring down I still didn't feel like pushing, and was worried about starting before my body was ready, since I was anticipating a very long pushing phase what with her being sunny side up. My midwife came in to check me and as soon as she pulled back my gown she said, "Well, she's got a lot of hair!" She was right at the edge of crowning already! No wonder I had so much rectal pressure. They quickly broke down the table and told me to give it my first push. As I pushed, I felt the weirdest sensation of baby movement, and she totally corkscrewed to anterior! I gave it one more push and delivered her head. Her heart started to decel so I had to push her shoulders out without a contraction, which was rough, but then there she was and my midwife was telling me to grab her! About 6 minutes of pushing all together. I could tell she was big just by looking, but imagine my shock when they weighed her later and found she was 9 lb, 1 oz! Thank God she flipped when she did, because pushing out a 9+ lb posterior baby sounds like hell. Only got 1 stitch!
Ok, that's my way too long novel. Sorry if there were way too many details, I'm just always so curious about others' birth stories, figured I'd tell the whole thing.
