Spending time outdoors in the heat with baby

Hey Ladies

Anyone have any tips for having baby outdoors in the summer heat and/or on sunny days?
I know we're not supposed to use sunscreen before 6 months, and it seems like it will be a constant balance between keeping baby from getting hot while keeping his skin covered. It makes me feel like I can't leave my house if the sun is out!

We just make sure he is in the shade and is wearing a hat and sunglasses. Also, I think that a little sun is exposure is okay as long as it's not too direct and not for a long period of time. They need to get their vitamin D! We also have a stroller fan to help keep him cool and a muslin material stroller cover that keeps the sun off but is not too hot / still allows a breeze.

  • Question- where were you able to find a hat? I've looked at several stores and could only find one for toddlers, too big for LOs head.

I got LO a hat at Target. With the baby swim stuff.

Yeah we got him a few bucket hats at target and the Beaufort bonnet co has cute swim hats. My baby has a really big head though (in the 100th percentile since birth haha) so it's been a non-issue finding hats! :)@thecubiclee
  • I just experienced this today :). It's 80° here and we had LO in the stroller with a hat and sunglasses (purchased at Target with the swim gear). I also purchased a battery operated fan that misted water to help cool her off. To go an extra step further we also had an umbrella that I used for additional shade. She stayed nice and cool for the 4 hours we were outside!

What do yall do with baby at the beach? We have an umbrella and a little tent to make sure he's shaded but then do you just hold them or lay them down on a towel?
  • I found a hat at the Children's Place. Once Upon a Child (nation-wide consignment store) had a whole bin. You just had to dig for the right size. I found two with the original tags still on--one was Janie and Jack, and I got it for $2!
  • I just had my little one outside today really for the first time other than going for walks. I just made sure she had pants and a longsleeved on and a bucket hat. It's sunny here but it's a little chilly which is why I have her in the long sleeve shirt. I did buy a tent type thing for her to use when we are outside. It's kind of like a tent that is cut in half you usually see people have it at the beach I'm not sure what exactly it's called but we put it on the grass when we are outside in the garden and she plays with her toys inside of it
  • I wish there were more hats for kiddos. Anyone find any super cute girl ones? DD2 has one with navy and purple that I found at Target but I thought there may be more options. I may need to go to a consignment store. They shut down the Once Upon A Child here.

The Beaufort Bonnet Company has the cutest sun hats for girls! They are adorable and I would definitely get some if I had a girl. My husband said no the the boy bonnets - he thinks they are too girly for boys. Oh well, maybe if/when I have a girl! TBBC is pricey, but everything I've gotten from there has been good quality. I've given a few things as gifts over the past few yrs.

Thank you so very much for sharing! Love love love what they have! I wish they had more of the floats because the swan one....OMG is too cute! And love love love the hats! Yays! Thank you so much!
  • Also, it may be worth asking your pediatrician. I just asked mine about sunscreen at our four month visit, yesterday. She said the 6 month thing is basically something the sunscreen manufacturers have done to limit their liability. She said to go ahead and use sunscreen as well as keeping lo pretty well covered. I asked because we have a boat that lo loves to go on and it's been in the 90* range here in Houston. For the boat she suggested a hat, long sleeve top, and swim diaper, with sunscreen on the non-covered places.
