Kidney pain while taking metformin for PCOS

Has anyone else experienced kidney/flank pain while taking metformin?

I Just increased my dose to 1000 mg and started having moderate - severe kidney pain.

I was instructed to stop taking it for now, just curious if anyone else had this side effect?

thanks!

Re: Kidney pain while taking metformin for PCOS

  • I am in my first week of 1500 mg, and have not had the pain you describe, but have noticed that I am way dehydrated and have been having to drink a lot more water than I am used to. My doctor did mention to me that I should make sure I was drinking enough clear fluids during the day, and that if I noticed any side effects that did not improve over a few days, to stay at the lower dose until they subside. My worst side effect of the metformin was severe stomach upset... But it always got better before it was time to dose up, so I kept going with it. Now, a week into 1500 mg, the stomach upset is starting to subside, and becoming more infrequent. So I'm hoping that it's all smooth sailing from here.

Feb 2016: 1st RE apt - diagnosed with PCOS still possible uterine septum. Put on BC for cysts, HSG will be in March

March 2016: HSG showed both tubes blocked (right tube holding fluid), no uterine septum, need surgery

April 2016:  Surgery to remove right (hydrosalpinx) fallopian tube and adhesions from the left - all went well!

May 2016: Waiting to start 3 months of un-monitored cycles in July with metformin and letrozole. If no success, going straight to IVF!

  • I hope you feel better soon! I hit reply before I could add that I recently had surgery to remove a hydrosalpinx (right tube was filled with fluid), and resulted in my entire left fallopian tube being removed. When it would get inflamed I would feel very sore in my abdomen, but fever would also accompany. I can't say that's what you have going on, but I know the feeling! I hope you get it sorted out soon!

  • @Sapreenamaree So sorry to hear about your surgery. I'm glad the gastrointestinal stuff calmed down for you soon too, that's great!!

I am suppose to get up to 1500 mg as well. The 500 mg didn't seem to have much of an effect with my stomach or kidney, but once I hit the 1000 I had the gastrointestinal stuff...which seemed to be subsiding (but then my RE had me stop taking it to figure out what was going on with my kidney)
i have had two kidney surgeries previously on the same one that was hurting. They did a UA to rule out any infection and an ultrasound yesterday, so waiting on the results of that.
I really hope I can continue taking the medication for the PCOS!!
I know metformin can be really hard on the kidneys so I think that's why they are being extra cautious.

    Good luck to you!! :)
