Joint pain in hands?

Maybe this is just a sign the I've spent way too much time scrolling through these threads on my phone, but my thumb is killing me. It's been hurting for about 4 days and hurts when I move or use it much. Funny enough small movement like typing this on my phone doesn't hurt much, it more any movement that requires pressing down like using the soap dispenser, holding a toothbrush, washing my hair, etc. It may be a teensy bit swollen but not bad. Any recommendations?

  • I'm actually ashamed to post here lol but I have had that problem on occasion when I text a lot directly from my phone. What I have done when the situations occur are stop the repetitious movement that caused it. In my case I stop texting for a few days. I can always funnel my texts through my laptop so I do that since the keyboard doesn't cause me discomfort.

  • So I've had a couple friends who got terrible carpal tunnel and tendinitis during pregnancy--I guess from a combo of repetitive movement and pregnancy swelling (?).

A few years ago, I had to make some work adjustments due to hand issues. I use a joy-stick style ergonomic mouse and wrist braces (light ones that are like a fingerless glove w/ a wrist wrap while typing, then full support splints for when my wrists are playing up and i'm not typing...got both from cvs). Look after your hands and hope you feel better!

I've had previous issues with carpal tunnel too, though wrists not thumbs/fingers. Pregnancy definitely seems to exacerbate it. I keep wrist guards around and wear them for a few days to bed and to work. They serve the dual purpose of protecting my wrists from abuse and pointing out to me all the things I do that abuse my poor wrists.

I talked to my OB since it popped up during pregnancy and she was able to help. I'd start there.
