Infertility

IUI newbie, needs advice from IUI Vets :)

Good morning and happy Monday ladies!

1st and foremost good luck today @wifeinraleigh28 im thinking about you today!!!

and now,

We are officially in our 2ww period and I have no clue what to expect! Whats good, whats bad etc etc etc! Ive tried to look online but there is just so much I dont know what is right or whats wrong.

Side note: My dh, oh my dh! in the beginning of this process he was very anti-treatment bc he felt it should happen naturally! Once a close friend got a bfp after a round of clomid he was finally on board and now IM the calm one and he's the impatient one!! Makes me giggle, anyone else have this experience! We have totally switch roles and i cant lie its kinda cute to see him so anxious as we wait ;)

Re: IUI newbie, needs advice from IUI Vets :)

  • My first IUI I was VERY in tune with every little thing that happened in my body. (I feel bloated- does this mean I'm pregnant?? I'm sneezing a lot- could I be pregnant??)

In my mind, I thought we'd tried naturally for so long, that now, with all these super duper drugs, why wouldn't it happen? Of course, now we're on IUI #2, so obviously the first time didn't stick.

But now I'm a little more than halfway through the 2WW, and now I know that most bodily reactions (for me, at least) are due to the progesterone. So I'm not nearly as obsessed. It could also be that I'm using HPTs daily to monitor the ovidrel leaving my system, so I know when I can trust a positive.

    Hang in there!

  • @ADRIANAC1982 You are so sweet, thank you for the well wishes!

I was similarly obsessed like @LeFemmeViolette after our first IUI.  I symptom spotted like crazy.  I learned it's best not to do this since symptoms cannot be due to pregnancy until your HCG level is high enough to turn a pregnancy test positive.  Any symptoms you experience are likely due to meds, and a lot of girls get their BFPs and have no symptoms whatsoever beforehand.  Funny, I had all the symptoms after IUI #1 and not a single symptom after IUI #2, which I think was so psychological after our first.  Honestly, the TWW is the worst and feels like two years instead of two weeks.  What works best for me is to try my best to not even think about how much time has passed and to just get myself involved in other things to distract me.

    Hang in there!! :)

  • I will chime in here as well as I had 3 IUIs. I felt exactly the same after my 1st one as the PPs said. I symptom spotted the entire 2 weeks. I had cramps and thought I was pregnant. Then I had nausea and I thought I was pregnant. Then I was constantly hungry and thought for sure I was pregnant. Then it failed. Second IUI I didn't feel a thing. 3rd IUI I didn't symptom spot, but deep down I knew it felt different. Unfortunately all 3 tries failed and we moved on to IVF. I don't think there's a rule book on what to expect. I think staying calm and stress-free is key, even though I know it's so so hard. My husband was also hesitant at first because he wanted it to happen naturally. Unfortunately naturally is unlikely with my PCOS so he accepted that fact.

  • @ADRIANAC1982 fx this is it for you!  I have had 4 IUIs so far (currently in the tww).  When I was in the tww for #1, the crazies really hit me hard.  I had a consult with an acupuncturist, and while she wouldn't treat me at that point in my cycle as a new patient, we talked about Traditional Chinese Medicine-based diet changes and I decided to start acupuncture with IUI #2.  I don't know if either diet changes or acupuncture have an impact (I haven't seen studies about acupuncture like there are for IVF), but I realized that anything to make me feel like I had some little bit of control helped me feel better.  Even if it's really just the illusion of control.

And I know everyone is different in terms of testing, but I have never tested out the trigger or POAS before my beta.  I used to POAS when we were TTC on our own and I hated how I felt holding onto a glimmer of hope that I got a false negative.  My first 2 IUIs I had a beta 14 dpiui and got AF either the night before or morning of.  It  added to my stress over whether I was pregnant or not to worry about whether I would make it to the beta.  For IUI #3, I scheduled the beta for 16 dpiui, and while I was still anxious, the possibility of getting AF didn't feel quite as loaded.

The best thing I did with my IUIs was to learn not to test early.  I waited the full two weeks with the last couple.

If you start testing at days 9, 10, and 11, you will start obsessing over "false negative" statistics, and drive yourself nuts.  Find things to take your mind off it, and ignore your symptoms.

    Or, at least, try.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • @KLake42 for the first time in weeks I have had a ton of work to do so its actually perfect timing. Im so busy I barely have time to wonder about whats going on in my body right now!!! :)
