Pregnancy Pillows - Yay or Nay?

I know there was some talk about the comforts of sleeping while prego awhile back, but it's really becoming an issue lately and I'm seriously looking into investing in a pregnancy pillow. Besides waking up to pee at least twice a night, I'm constantly waking up because of plain old discomfort...and I'm only 17 weeks. How bad is it going to be when I'm carrying a bowling ball?  I'm a back sleeper, so I'm desperately trying to become a side sleeper, but I frequently wake up on my back. Is a pregnancy pillow worth it? If so, what kind have any of you had the most luck with?  There appear to be several different shapes and types...Snoogle, Leachco, Boppy, wedge... How does one choose? Or should I just start surrounding myself with regular pillows?  Help.

I have the leachco. It's shaped like a giant u. It has changed my life. My husband hates it because it takes up so much room, but it's the only way I can get somewhat comfortable.

  • I borrowed the one that looks like a C from my best friend and it isn't working for me. The biggest problem is that there isn't enough room in our queen bed for baby daddy, me, and the pillow. I would like to try the wedge.
  • I bought a snoogle super early to start getting used to sleeping on my side. I would always fall asleep on my side but end up on my back by morning. It's the one shaped like a C rather than the one that surrounds your whole body.

I went with the snoogle because most of my friends have used one with their pregnancies and said it did wonders. It has definitely helped with sciatic pain I was having, but my lower back does still hurt sometimes. Sometimes I do still end up kind of on my back, but I'm still propped up enough that I'm not worried about it too much.

It it was like $60+ but I would definitely recommend it. Plus it's like a permanent spoon all night long! My dog also enjoys lying on it regardless if I'm using it or not. haha

@LMNOBaby I'm a back sleeper too and also been trying to break that habit. I have a large body pillow on my left side and my MIL bought me the Snoogle and that's on my right side but it drives me nuts. So just like @jeng100, I'm going to try the Leachco. Luckily we have a king size bed for all this stuff.

I have a Snoogle and it doesn't help me. I'm a back sleeper, and even if I'm using the Snoogle, I wake up on my back every. single. time. I also don't find it overly comfortable. Last night I threw it on the floor and figured if I'm going to wake up on my back, I might as well be comfortable leading up to that.

I think maybe a wedge would work for me, and since they're much less expensive, maybe I'll give one a try.

FWIW: I woke up on my back allllll the time in the first pregnancy. Event at 9 months. And, nothing bad ever happened to baby or me.

  • I bought the Snoogle too, and sometimes I enjoy it but I still end up on my back most nights. Last night I finally took it out of my bed and actually slept really good using the bobby and some normal pillows. I am thinking of trying the wedge as well..

  • I bought the Snoogle but really didn't like it. I ended up with a super full body pillow and I love it. I may also get a wedge to put on the other side. Bonus is that a body pillow is way cheaper.

  • I'm a side sleeper, but I'm also a huge tosser (I mean every 20 minutes I move, if not sooner).  I'm also plus size so I was finding my lower back killing me.  I found a gently used wedge online so I got that - it helps sometimes but because I move so much I have to wake up to move it to the new side, set it up under me and fall back to sleep.  Some days I find it causes more discomfort than help, but if my back is hurting it does provide relief.  I'm also trying the pillow between my legs and that's helping too.

  • I also have the Snoogle. I love it when I actually use it. When I don't use it I always wake up on my stomach. I've always been a stomach sleeper and I've been trying to break the habit. I like the support that the Snoogle provides but sometimes it gets too hot and uncomfortable so that's when I don't use it and end up on my stomach.
  • For those of you FTMs worried about accidentally sleeping on your back- trust me, if you do end up on your back later in pregnancy, it won't last long. You will wake up. It gets to the point where you won't be able to breathe on your back, and you will move.
  • I love mine. I forgot what it's called but it's lasted through all my babies. The only problem is that it's huge but that's only a problem for my husband.

  • I bought a snoggle with my 1st pregnancy, but didn't really like it. It does keep you on your side for sure, but I like to flip from side to side b/c I get so sore in one position, and it is difficult to wind your body around that thing in your sleep to do that. Also, it take up a lot of space.

I tend to just like to use an additional regular pillow and move it around to where I need it.

  • I tried the snoogle, as well, and was definitely not a fan. Then, I tried a regular body pillow. Didn't like that either because it was so big that I was overwhelmed by the heat it created and moving it back and forth in the middle of the night (when I wanted to switch from one side to another) was very annoying. Now I just use a regular pillow and put it between my legs. I'm still fighting the urge to just sleep on my back, but I assume it'll get easier over time. Maybe?!

I got the snoogle. It's comfy at first but I move a lot and it's too cumbersome to move with me. And it does get really hot so I can't imagine what it will be like in the summer.... good thing I had a gift card cuz that thing is pricey

  • Ok, so apparently I can reply now. Anyways, I'm "meh" on pregnancy pillows. I've personally never tried the snoogle since I don't like that you have to flip it if you switch sides. I got one that is shaped like a giant U, with the intent being you can use it on either side. It's ok, but I still end up on my back most nights.
  • I've never had one, but we have a king sized bed so I just use one between my legs and have one kinda under my belly that I hug. So there is lots of room for all my pillows, when the heart burn gets bad I have like three under my head to elevate myself. I can never sleep on my back anyway though.

  • With my first pregnancy, I had the Snoogle and my husband complained about how much room it took up in our bed. This time, we have a bigger bed and I got the mini-Snoogle. I like it, but it's a pain to switch sides (which I do frequently during the night) but I like that I can also fold it up for extra back support while sitting up in bed as well.

I get up to use the bathroom two/three times a night and I didn't want to have climb over a pillow that was half our bed. My coworker suggested the Boppy Pregnancy Pillow after I already returned the Babies R Us one and I love this one! And it's nice and soft too! The three pieces are Velcro so you can also move it around or take off what you don't want.

  • There isn't enough room my my bed for a giant pillow. I also roll around because my hands fall asleep during pregnancy and I'm not taking 20 minutes to rearrange a pillow to roll over or get out of bed to pee or attend to my toddler.

Last time I just shoved a king sized firm pillow under there if I felt like I needed it but I was pretty much sleeping half the nights in the rocking chair by 3rd tri anyway between insomnia and crippling hip pain trying to roll over. I let myself sleep on my back, I'd roll over pretty quickly even while asleep if it was uncomfortable.

  • I love my Snoogle. It doesn't bother me that I won't flip sides, but it does make it a bit more difficult to get out of bed. There is a little bit of a turtle flipped upside down action when my alarm is going off. The comfort is worth it though.

I'm really thinking about making it a permanent addition to the bed, even after baby is here. Fortunately we have a king size bed and it doesn't bother DH to add my massive pillow to the heap. He has a very strategic sleep strategy with like four pillows of various sizes anyway, so he can't say anything about my giant body pillow. We can basically never make our bed nicely, because it would require fishing out too many damn pillows lol.

  • I have a snoogle and just haven't learned to love it yet... Where I'm supposed to put my head just seems too firm and high for me to get comfortable
  • I received a Leachco Snoogle (weird c shape) very early in my pregnancy from a friend, who's sister swore by it, and I recommend it to every new expectant mom I meet. I am normally a back sleeper and this has helped me get into the habit of side sleeping. Sometimes I am not sure how I get to sleep without it sometimes I can only sleep with regular pillows. SO and dog both love it, and catch them using it all the time. I would like to warn that my best friend who is due a week ahead of me hated it for making her too warm and not allowing her to toss and turn easily in her sleep.
