Need to nest!

The nesting has hit hard! Unfortunately, we're in a rental and we are in no shape to buy a house any time soon, which I so desperately want to do. I'm still in college and I have awhile before I'm finished because I took some time off after high school. It's frustrating to be ready for a house to settle into and stay for the next 20+ years and not be able to! Maybe it's just the nesting talking but next time I move it will be the second to last (assuming retirement home or small condo in Florida for retirement one day). Is anyone else feeling my frustration?

Re: Need to nest!

  • I'm right there with you! It's been hitting me hard too, but unfortunately I can't do anything about it. :/ I move into my grandparents house on Monday to be their new live in "nurse" and will probably stay there until DF gets stationed somewhere around February.

Ouch, that's going to be rough with a newborn!

I'm hoping it won't be too hard. I hate to say it, but I don't think my grandfather will make it until November so it will likely just be me, my grandmother, and the baby. I guess I'll see where everything takes me

  • Yeah, we have a few houses and rentals but ultimately we aren't currently happy with our place. We want to live in the country but currently live in the city. We had spoke to our bank a couple times but every time we try to get our pre-approval something silly comes up and sets us back. Buying a house is a really long process so every set back just increases the time by like a lot.

So I feel yah. It's just kinda like c'mon really? I'm sorry that you are kinda stuck at the moment that's a bummer :( Seems to be like one of those life things that people get stuck at a lot though. Maybe for a reason though maybe that perfect house is out there and the stars are all aligning for the time to be right to get the right one? That's what I think about that makes me feel better about it.

  • Little+Tiny- yeah but it's good that you're thinking realistically. If it does just end up being the 3 of you it'll be loads easier. I'm not sure what state of mind your grandmother is in but I imagine it'll be somewhat like being a mom of two if you're caring for her.
  • When that second trimester energy starts to come back it's just like "YAY DO ALL THE THINGS!" I am such a huge planner that I tend to put that energy into researching and planning and all that jazz, when I probably should just be cleaning and that.

It's just so annoying! I really need to stop online house hunting because I keep finding these gorgeous homes that I'd move into in a heart beat! It is torture! I've always loved the idea of being in the country with the fresh air and the quiet and the space (found a beautiful house there too). We live in a town with low property value so we can get a huge house (think 3,000+ sq ft) for under 120k. To get an amazing job is probably 30-45 minute drive but definitely worth it. Maybe I'm being blocked so I can graduate and find the perfect job before the perfect house. Positive thinking!
  • I think part of my nesting problem is not being able to do it at all with my first. We moved into our current place literally the day before he was born. I was in labor sitting and watching everyone else move my stuff.
  • So jealous of the house hunting. I'm in that state of mind where I'm ready to buy a house and settle into my nest, but military life completely prevents that.

  • Ahhhh that has to be so hard :'( That makes me so sad. I know what you mean too nothing is more disheartening that looking up a house that you know is within your price range that you feel is perfect and then having SOMETHING be in the way of you getting it.

My goodness too @Little+Tiny so much respect for your situation too. God Bless you being willing to help your grandparents that's amazing and ugh about waiting on DF to get stationed. That stuff takes sooo much time and is such a hassle. I'm really familiar with that whole process and it never gets easier.

  • @Oakleypoozles It wouldn't be so bad if I knew where we would end up next year, but it's really up in the air right now and I hate surprises.

@Little+Tiny  - I'm actually totally not hip on the abbreviations. Does DF mean Dear Father or Dear Friend? If it's the first time being stationed you sorta get a little bit of knowledge because they usually get to pick between three locations. You don't know for sure which one but at least you know it's one of the three and for that first one they do seem to try and honor your preference. If it's not the first time being stationed though those are double scary for sure. They could tell you they are thinking Texas one day and then you find out last minute your headed to Alaska lol. Really stressful. Will he/she at least get 3 years to stay at wherever they are stationed? I know things differ a bit between the different branches and all.

SO and MIL think I'm nuts to want to buy a house right now (granted we haven't told MIL I'm pregnant yet [and I see her everyday]). I have debt to pay off, insurance to square away, blah blah blah. We'll get the perfect place eventually. It's just tough seeing all of these perfect houses and projects and whatnot. I'd love to reno right now and make the house mine. I also need to stay off of HGTV. It's like a disease.
  • Oh my gosh, I'm crying at the HGTV disease haha. OMG have you seen Fixer Upper? I'm so obsessed with that show I love them and they have seasons of it on Netflix. Double bad lol.

  • I have! Right now I'm going through everything HGTV on the IL's DVR. I just got done binging on property brothers and all I want to do is buy a house and fix it up. I'll have to get in on fixer upper next since I'm almost done with property brothers!
  • @Oakleypoozles DF= darling fiance. It'll be our first time being stationed. He is enlisting in July though, so we really don't know what to expect at all. The army recruiter gave us a few different places we could end up (Texas, Alaska, Wisconsin?, Kentucky, Virginia) but we have no idea what's going to happen. We would like to stay here in Virginia for a little while, but who knows.

  • @Little+Tiny  - Are you guys getting married beforehand? Military doesn't care about engagements they'll throw his butt in the barracks lol. And booo on all of those different places it used to be when you enlisted you could choose 3 and they would make every effort to honor your preference. Maybe he still gets a chance to do that later? It's been a while for me. If I were you I'd hope for Alaska by the way :) I loved Alaska!

  • I feel ya. We're building our house right now, it won't be done until July 1st...which is plenty of time before November, but I'm anxious to nest now. There's so much to figure out with the new house still. I'm so over making decisions. I just want it done!!

  • @Oakleypoozles yeah we're gonna do a tiny JOP wedding at some point before he enlists. I'm hoping we get a choice, but Alaska is furthest on our list. It's a beautiful vacation spot, but that's about as far away from home as I can get without moving out of country. Texas or Kentucky wouldn't be too bad.

We briefly considered building. It sounded really stressful. What's your experience so far? Is it something you'd do again? What kind of things surprised you with that?

This thread makes me happy to at least have my living situation in order. We bought our house last year and there isn't much that still needs to be done. Baby will be in our room for a while at first, so I feel no need to start planning anything beyond a crib at this point.  If it makes you guys feel any better, the baby just needs a place to sleep! It doesn't care about the nursery theme. You have lots of time to figure the small details out.
I would actually decorate the nursery beforehand.  After I had the baby a bunch of things went to hell in a handbasket.  The last thing I wanted to spend time doing was decorating a nursery (but I also had a very difficult baby).

  • I want to nest so freaking badly but we're getting restationed to san diego from Florida in july so I can't buy much of anything until we move into our house over there, which we don't even know we have yet because military housing is complicated and inefficient to the max. Bleh.

@Little+Tiny depending on his rate and the branch he is joining it's very unlikely that Alaska would be an option.

Heard. We also currently have tenants living downstairs (a single fam converted into a duplex) so we don't have a bedroom to decorate. The plan is to have the whole house when baby is 1.
  • @Oakleypoozles it's been an okay experience so far. Everything is more expensive than we thought it would be. We're spending about 100k more than we wanted to. Ouch. Making a million decisions is stressful. But it will be 100% ours, and everything will be clean and new. I'm really excited to get in there.

We tore down an old house in an old neighborhood, and I am really glad that's the route we went. We're working with a custom home builder, so no half built subdivision with no trees, no cookie cutter homes, and no restrictions on design alterations. I would never do it the other way. If a new neighborhood is what you want, it would be cheaper to buy a pre-existing home and remodel to suit your taste.

I would do it again, but I'd make sure we could stay in our home while we built. We sold our last house to afford this project and moved into our old condo. We're so cramped for space and 90% of our stuff is in a storage unit. That's seriously irritating when I'm lookin for things. I hate where we're at right now. It was fine when it was jut the two of us and our college furniture. Now we have a toddler and all our grown up things and nothing fits. Ugh. 6 more weeks(ish)

  • Katemr1146  - Wow, that's been a really long and interesting journey. 100k difference what you originally thought must have been a heck of a shock too lol I would have cried. It sounds like it will be storybook perfect when it's done though! It also sounds like a really exciting (albeit exhausting) experience!

I hope you'll come and post a picture or something when it's done! Congratulations by the way what a cool new chapter of life!

  • We've been in our house for 6 years and have talked about all sorts of projects.  Knowing that DD will move to the guest room so the house will be in upheaval for a bit has me wanting to all the things we've talked about.  Especially pulling up the living room and nursery carpet and refinishing our hardwood floors - that run through our entire house.  It would involve moving everything out of the house for a period to have it done but, when else would be a better time??

  • LOVE old hardwood floors. I think that's the best update for older houses ever. Man a super huge pain in the butt but would be gorgeous when it's done!

We just bought a new house and I'm picking out tile and paint colors and all that good stuff.  Since we have flipped a couple houses, this decorating thing seems natural to me, so I didn't realize I was nesting.  But maybe I'm nesting?

  • @Little+Tiny Well I don't think you have to worry about that. If you have any questions regarding any part of the military life or getting married (DH and I got married in a court room months before our actual "wedding") feel free to message me! :)

  • @NavyBride93 I will probably take you up on that at some point. I'm equal parts confused and terrified about military life added onto a newborn.

  • YES! Well, actually, does it count if you haven't really acted on it? :#

I have all these great ideas and get super motivated during the day at work but then by the time I get home I am just pooped so I put it off til the next day but then still, nada.

We *are* getting a new bed this weekend and picking out paint colors so that's something at least but still. I feel lazy :(

  • I'm saving my nesting for the real nesting phase, late third trimester. I was literally washing base boards and walls two weeks before delivery.

I'm with you @HomeyDontPlayThat after my divorce I learned really quickly that I could walk away from all the "stuff" in my life and not miss anything.  The goodwill down the road from me loves me.

  • Renting here too... my problem with purging is that I don't know where to start. And hubby has odd attachments to some of his stuff, but is super supportive of me getting rid of my stuff. Weird double standard, personally. When I initially move in, it was his place, and I felt like I had to keep what stuff I did have away. (I moved west just over a year before we moved in, so I didn't have a lot of stuff out here that I was attached to).

That is my life right now! Bouts of motivation followed by wanting to do nothing at all. Still totally counts, because it's the thought that counts right??
