Swaddling in the news

https://wric.com/2016/05/10/study-links-swaddling-to-heightened-risk-of-sids/

This is the second time I've seen this on my Facebook today. I haven't had an infant for 8 years so I've been reading up on anything new since then. So swaddle but don't put them on their side when swaddling, I mean we knew back to sleep was best anyway correct???

  • That's what I thought as well, none of the articles I've seen have had clear cut info on exactly what you just said. Ugh the news makes me crazy!
  • Basically I take it to mean wean off the swaddle at 8 weeks & be careful of how you put baby down when swaddled. I'm going to ask my OB.

yeah that article is so misleading. they said its higher if you swaddle AND belly sleep. who belly sleeps? that is baby 101 back sleep forever. also they said its a higher risk when they can roll (to their stomachs) and get caught and can't get out

so yeah, then back sleep (duh) and don't swaddle rolling babies, get a sleep sack so their arms are free. all common sense stuff (to me anyway)
    And this too.

I didn't click the link, but saw this in the news recently.   My thought was if it only shows increased risk for SIDS when on the belly or side, it's that what everyone already knew, swaddled or not.  I thought it was more to scare people.  I'm going to swaddle when they are little and switch to a wearable blanket when she starts being able to roll over.  They also have the wearable blankets where you can swaddle just the arms.

  • I saw the article yesterday. You have to be a special kind of stupid to roll a baby up like a burrito and place them face down on a  mattress. Seriously, who's doing that?!

I can maybe see how someone who isn't very educated on safe sleep might need to be told not to put a swaddled baby on their side.

My MIL posted it on Facebook. I found the title of the article completely misleading. It's common sense.

I rarely swaddled with DS. I will say that DS was a side and stomach sleeper right out the womb. He rolled over as soon as he was out the oven. I have a picture of the nurse putting himon his back and he rolled over to his side. She looked at me like I was crazy. I slept on my side and stomach throughout my entire pregnancy. This time around I start on my side or stomach and end up on my back. I have never been a back sleeper before. I guess we will see how this one does once it's out.
  • Yeah, I feel like generally this is another one of those parenting fear-mongering articles.  Like we don't have enough to be concerned about already .  .  . it doesn't sound like swaddling poses any additional risks to babies who sleep on their backs and can't roll yet.

That having been said -- I am a stomach sleeper.  Always have been.  And both ultrasounds last week showed baby very happily flopped face down, kicking and squirming away.  So getting this kid to sleep on his/her back may be an adventure.

First time logging in on in a while but saw this and needed to comment. Watch this video and see how you feel about the reporting of scientific studies. Of course, always do what makes you feel most comfortable, but I think that this study and the way it was reported has something to do with the issues mentioned during this clip

  • I just wanted to say I heart John O forever. I don't agree with a couple rants he's had but it's like 2 out of a thousand so he gets a pass.

Also, DS was like yours @cd92007 in that he couldn't roll all the way, but almost immediately could roll to the side and there's nothing anyone could say or do about it. As soon as he could roll all the way, he's been a stomach sleeper ever since. I've always been a stomach sleeper too (last time until about 32 weeks) and thankfully he's taken after me in the sleep department. I very much hope this LO will too (H sleeps like crap and always has).

However I should add that DS never tolerated a swaddle, so we just had to deal with the BS moro reflex until it passed. We tried pretty much everything BUT the woombie and merlin's sleepsuit, which I'm sure are probably the only ones that work. I guess we have another chance now!

@NoraAurora our son is a stomach sleeper now, too (has been since rolling). And it's funny, the Woombie and Merlin suit were the two that we used!! They worked great for him until he learned to roll to his tummy and finally got comfy ;)

  • I've been rolling my eyes at that article all day today. Way to just terrify parents for no reason. There are some pretty basic sleep safety guidelines (back to sleep, no stuffed animals/blankets/bumpers/etc in crib, don't continue full swaddle once baby can roll) that are continually the caveats to these bunk articles. The title should read "Unsafe infant sleep practices tied to SIDS" and we can all move on.

DD liked having her arms out from infancy. She'd break out of a basic blanket swaddle, so we used a lot of sleep sacks. Those things were like magic! She was such a snuggly little burrito.

  • @ignoscemihi @bnsmith06 Yes! I loooove John Oliver and immediately thought of that segment when I started seeing all of these articles popping up.  How irresponsible for media to write all of these stories full of information that's already been proven, but act like there's some new cause.  Clearly, swaddling isn't the problem, stomach/side sleeping is the problem.  But that's already been written about, so they're twisting the research to make it sound like some new exciting thing.  Ugh.

That was us! DD HATED having her arms swaddled. She was a preemie who spent 13 days in the NICU and that frustrated the nurses to no end lol. My little girl in the incubator who was determined to let her arms fly free! She was same at home too. Lots of sleep slacks and long sleeved shirts with a swaddle just under her arm pits.
