SS living situation

My step son lives with his mom most of the time, in a garage that was enclosed, illegally I presume because he has no running water. His mom even just accidentally text my husband saying "JJ's toilet is too full and he needs to pee is anyone home so he can go?" She obviously meant that to her husband, they live in the garage to his sister's house. How illegal or unsafe/unsanitary is this?! What can we do about it?

Call CPS and report the situation. That's all you can do.

CPS won't do anything. So horrible.

Have you called them, or are you just assuming that they won't do anything because of whatever reason?
If they have a poor living situation - no running water, no facilities, etc. - then CPS can and will do something.

However, if they live primarily in the garage, but use the facilities and such in the house - then there's really nothing wrong with the situation. It's inconvenient, sure, but, there's nothing wrong with the situation. Are you sure the plumbing wasn't backed up that day? Are you sure they weren't having work done and couldn't use the facilities in the house? Crap happens. Just because they're living in someone's converted garage doesn't mean they have no facilities and no running water.

I'm assuming. My dad does construction and it's illegal to build a living quarters and not have any running water. He tells us they don't have toilets and that they shower in his aunts house. It just seems ridiculous that we pay all this money and he lives in crap when we have a nice place for him to live with us.
  • Call CPS, since you haven't already, like PP suggested. Have EVIDENCE of your case, i.e. that text message. Never assume anything when it comes to a child's safety...
