Taking Baby Swimming

I took Ryan to the Y swimming for the first time today - he's 22 weeks now. He's always loved his bath, so I expected he would enjoy it. He loved it. I put him in a swim diaper and initially had a life vest on him, but took it off and opted to just hold him tight and close to me. He loved it! At first he wasn't sure about the cool water -- but once he got acclimated he kicked and played and smiled and screeched for about a half hour then got tired (and fussy) and took a 2 hour nap. Anyone else have a fish? Any tips/ideas for fun baby and me swim activities?

I don't have an any suggestions, but my baby is 24 weeks and my husband just took him to his first swim class today! It's at our local Boys & Girls club. My son reacted exactly like yours, he very happily did his half hour lesson, came home ate and took a two hour nap. I think it really tuckered him out :)

  • Mayen look for a water babies class?
  • I plan to do a water babies class in June at the Y.  I'm also thinking about getting a mesh ring sling, since we have a pool and -I- am a fish, I thought it'd be a fun way to wade around in it on hot days.  DD loves to splash around in the tub so I think the pool will be similarly fun, so long as it's not too cold.

The blow up baby mesh toys r great! I used one with my first two and will do so with this little nugget once the weather is nicer. It's much easier for u to use both hands without thinking your baby might slip out of your grip!

I can't wait to take DD to the pool when the weather gets warmer. I bought her a bathing suit from carters but she also has a swim diaper. I don't think the swim diaper will fit well under her suit. What else does she wear with the diaper? I was looking for a long or 3/4 sleeved swim top (sort of like a surfing top) but not sure where to look or if this is the right thing to pair with a swim diaper. Any advice?

Rashguards are great! Carters has them and also check out Amazon. They have the iplay brand that comes in a lot of colors.

Im not sure if you a reusable swim diaper or not but I would buy another one as a back up. Swim diapers will only hold in poop but not pee. So if they poop you will need a back up. I always waited into I got to the pool to put DD in a swim diaper so she wouldn't have an accident in her car seat.

Rash guards are great to pair with a swim diaper! Old navy, carters, gap, etc all have them. I get a few every year for DS because he has fair skin and burns easily even with constant reapplications of sunblock. I plan on getting some for DD too. I agree with @MoRay05, wait to put the swim diaper on until just before getting into the pool so you reduce the risk of a dirty diaper. Hope your little one enjoys the pool!
  • Thanks for the advice ladies!!

I'm not sure if you're using disposable or re-usable swim diapers, but I just wanted to add that we haven't had trouble with bathing suits fitting over disposable swim diapers. If it's a tight fit, we usually just get a different bathing suit in the next size up. (I like their bathing suits to be on the looser side anyways...it's easier to get off when they're wet that way!)

Thanks for the tip! We have a reusable swim diaper right now (Charlie banana I believe) but I think it might fit if I go one size up!
  • I'm a little late to the party, but DS is starting swim lessons in June, and our place requires a disposable swim diaper under a reusable cover. My plan is to do that with a rash guard shirt. My mom got him some pretty cute swim trunks, but I'm really digging his adorably chunky thighs, so I don't want to cover them up.

With DD1 we just used a stained baby shirt(or onesie), or play shirt and put on her. Plan on doing the same with dd2 when we go swimming.

Saves money and keeps from wasting unused baby cloths lol

When wet, a basic cotton t-shirt really doesn't give any kind of protection from the sun though.

If if we are going to be out for any length of time I usually do a long sleeve rash guard and bikini bottoms on the girls (over a swim diaper for my middle) and then my youngest will wear trunks and a rash guard.
