Zika article from my fertility docs :-)

With the summer months coming (well, maybe not here in NJ where it still doesn't want to get out of the 50s wtf?!?  btw, 5/4/12 was my wedding day and it was 90 degrees that year, so who the heck knows!!!), I thought I'd share an article by my fertility docs.  They're really awesome and know their stuff (hence, use having 2 babies in 2 years  )!

Thank you! This is great information......albeit confirming more and more fears about stupid Zika!

I feel like they're basically saying don't be scared, though.  Take the necessary precautions, but still live your life, which I totally agree with.  We're going to Disney this weekend, so down in FL territory where the risk is probably higher.  I'm just going to wear leggings and bug spray.

  • I'm going to try out those 2 repellents they suggested... I've never heard of those before
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @rikopy I had never heard of them either.  Someone else has posted some links to CDC articles and Sawyer Picardin is also one of the top ones that the CDC studied as being effective against Zika mosquitoes, so that's what I'm going with!

Thanks I will be ordering that bug spray!
  • can it harm 3rd trimester as well? when i was reading the article it stated 1st and 2nd trimester, i am just confused
  • Katm89Katm89 member
@emmeline714 they were explaining that DEET can harm 1 & 2nd tri but I didn't see much on the virus and whether it is only a danger in early pregnancy... bec honestly I don't think they know... and they can't ethically do a study on it.
  • emmeline714  I don't think they have conclusive studies to be able to make a claim.  However, from what I've read about it, microcephaly basically kills good healthy brain cells, so you'd think that would apply regardless of timing in pregnancy.  There's too many unanswered questions still out there about it.

  • From what I've read it can be harmful in all three trimesters, unfortunately, because of how it kills brain cells. I would assume it would be worse in the first and second though? Thank you for posting the article!
  • I would most like to know if there is a time during pregnancy where the fetus is at most risk. My doctor told me the first trimester is most susceptible, and that by 2nd and 3rd trimester, if you do get Zika, it shouldn't harm the baby. BUT I don't know if she has credible sources for that info since I hadn't read it anywhere. Being in 3rd tri during summer makes me feel better, but it seems like baby could still get Microcephaly in 3rd tri. I live in Texas and we have loots of mosquitos during the summer. :/

There's nothing conclusive yet, so there really is no viable answer.  It's so new that they simply haven't have the time, or ethical way, to figure out if the risk lessens when you're further along. Microcephaly destroys good healthy brain cells in the fetus, so I would imagine that it could happen at any time.  I'm actually surprised that your doctor said that, seems like a risky statement for an OB to make given when little info there still is about it.  If anything, I'd think our docs would lean more in the conservative direction at this point.

  • In the initial reports they indicated they thought the 3rd trimester was the most dangerous, so until there is more research,  I would remain cautious throughout.
  • @SkiChic626 ... I've heard Disney has no bugs, at all, ever! So that should be safer than any other vacation destination?

I asked my doc what he knew about Zika a few weeks ago, and pretty much says he knows the same as everyone else :/

It's scary, but I just plan on loading up on my organic bug spray and hoping for the best. Sprayed my yard in hopes of keeping them and the wasps away. It worked last year, so hoping it works this year too
  • Thanks! Need to get more bug spray and will look for those brands.... So, what I was thinking about too. I know we will do our best to protect ourselves. But, what happens if you partner gets bit? My DH is a magnet for getting bitten (I luckily usually am not). But, being that it can be transferred through sex-that is scary too!

No Bugs at Disney?  Oh I wish that were true!  I'm in Orlando, just a few minutes north of Magic Kingdom and unfortunately with all of the water and swamp land we are bug central.  It's been at bay lately because of cooler weather, but we are getting ready for a warm up.  Ugh, here we go!
  • @mooncusp22 - there still have not been any locally acquired cases of Zika (through mosquito) in the US.  So as of now the risk of getting Zika is still minimal.  The CDC has put out a list of how many travel acquired cases there are in each state so maybe keep an eye on that to see if that makes the risk go up. Because we were in Mexico at the beginning of of all of this, we were told that we need to use condoms the remainder of the pregnancy.

I agree, no bugs at disney (meaning actually park property).  The rest of FL definitely has bugs but Disney has it together. We were there last month and nothing, at home, they are here in swarms.

  • I'm part of a Disney planning board on FB, and lots of people have been commenting that they've recently been and have seen mosquitoes or have been bit.  So while I'm sure they do a great job at keeping them at bay, I'm not taking chances....I'll be wearing leggings and bug spray

  • Target sells Sawyer Picardin in the garden section!
  • This is good to know. I was gardening earlier this week and got a few bites, makes you feel so paranoid!
