Brachial Plexus Injury

So our back story... When I went into active labor, DD's body was in position but her head was turned to the right.... like all the way turned. It took 2 1/2 hours of active pushing to get her in position. When she came out her right shoulder got stuck.

Fast forward 12 weeks. I took LO to the doc today for a cold (she got a low grade fever last night). I have noticed that she always has her arms up by her face. And she doesn't reach out with her right arm as much as her left. She did some reflex testing and determined that she has a brachial plexus injury. So now we meet with the local Children's hospital for PT & OT. We also need to meet with the main hospital to see if an MRI is needed. Thank God that my best friend runs the sedation unit at the main hospital. Hopefully it never comes to that!

The doc said it's not a serious thing. But anytime you hear MRI you can't help but have your heart sink. I was fine until I called my friend to tell her. Then I had a little meltdown.

This mommy shit is damn hard!!  :'(

** Here is a pic so you can see how she holds her hands. They aren't always like this but it tends to be her default position.

Re: Brachial Plexus Injury

  • Awww. So hard when things aren't going perfect with your baby. I've had a couple small issues that have already resolved but at the time they feel huge. You just want every thing to be good with your kids.
For what it's worth I work in radiology and an mri is no biggie. Sedation always seems scary but I am sure they will be Sooo careful with her. And you can stand right next to her the whole time.

  • I don't really have any advice for you, but your LO is absolutely adorable and I love her outfit :)
  • @jordans_wife I'm am just wishing that the appt time would get here sooner so I know exactly what's going on, what we need to do to fix it and how long they thing this will all take. I'm not worried about the sedation. My best friend is an FNP and actually runs the sedation unit at the hospital. I know she'd take the best care of my girl. You just don't want your kids to go through anything. And it sucks not taking the pain away.

@ashton2190 Thanks! :-) I have loved having a girl to dress up. And I found that jumper for $2 at a consignment sale. It's one of my favorite things she has to wear!
  • Thinking of you all! Hoping for the best!
  • Hugs I'm wishing you all the very best!!

I haven't been active on here in forever so I hope you don't mind me jumping in (and so late to the conversation) but I saw your post and was wondering how your baby is doing.

Hopefully pt works well for her. My baby has been going to physical therapy since she was 1 month (now 3 months) for issues with labor too.  It has made a huge difference, but it looks like we may be headed to more drastic treatment.

Yes, this mommy thing is hard! Even if it's not a "serious thing" it's still so hard. I cried at her first pt appointment when she started crying and I got really overwhelmed at times by all the at home stretching on top of all the other baby stresses.  It may take a long time for pt to work, but you will feel better when you start seeing improvement.

Shes beautiful by the way. :)
