I got a written perscription for a breast pump from my doctor. Ive called a couple different pharmacys but can find anywhere that can fill it. Anyone gone through this yet?
I personally have not, but have you tried Wal-Mart?? Otherwise you should probably make a call to your insurance to see what companies they have contract with.
I got mine at the hospital pharmacy with my first. They had durable medical supplies there. I just made my husband go get it (along with my my pain med prescriptions) before I was discharged. Check to see if your hospital has that (and make sure it's in your insurance network!).
I got mine through an online company. I made a call to my insurance provider and they let me know which companies they worked with. They each work with different companies, so edge park as mentioned above may/may not work with your insurance.
I used edge park as well and filled out a form online and received my pump the next week because everything was taken care of through them. I did send them in my prescription since I already had it, but they will ask your doctor for the prescription if you don't end up providing one.
I called my insurance company directly to ask them. Many companies will only honor payment or make a full payment if you go directly through one of their preferred companies. The guy on the phone was really helpful and was able to tell me from experience which company was by far the favorite of other moms he talked to and where you ended up getting a better product because of the stock they carry. I admit, I was skeptical at first when it was a guy but it ended up being one of the more useful customer service calls I've ever made to an insurance company! I can get a prescription and take it pretty much anywhere but they'll send me a set refund amount whereas if I go through their preferred people, they just send me a free pump and work it all out directly with insurance.
I don't know what insurance company you have, but I bought mine this time through yummymummystore.com (the name makes me cringe, but they had great customer service)
Ditto on calling insurance. Many times the doc should tell you how to fill it through them. I hear it's as easy as a phone call and they will walk you through it.
I went through AeroFlow and they checked with my insurance and contacted my doctor for the Rx. Now I'm just waiting to see whether I get the pump bag as a baby shower gift or not before making my final decision. I've had one person that I've been working with this whole time by phone and email.

I have Blue Cross and I called them and they put me through to Medela to order mine. I got the tote bag one so it was $75 out of pocket. I could've gotten a free one, but I chose to go for the upgrade. They offered express shipping for more $$, but I noted that baby isn't here yet so there was no need for that lol I got mine in the mail the next week.
I'm jealous you can get a prescription. My insurance provides an Ameda Purely Yours, which really didn't work well for me the first time around, so I'm stressing whether to go out and get the Medela Pump in Style for $$. DH mentioned getting one on craigslist or something, but that kind of grosses me out...
I took an infant care class at the hospital I'm delivering at, and they handed out an information sheet on one of the online companies in the area that deals with the insurance companies in my state. I then got a prescription from my doctor and got my bump in a few days.
Did you ask your OB? She gave me a few options as well, but it was easier to do it online.
Like pp said, edgepark or aeroflow could also be options, or call your insurance company. We can't really help you without knowing your insurance.

I would do that but buy new accessories. The pump itself is the most money, whereas the shields and stuff are easily replaceable.
I called my insurance directly. They told me which companies they work with, I made a quick phone call to that company and they dealt with my doctor directly. My pump arrived less than a week later at no charge.
My insurance company (BCBS) told me to go to my local medical equipment store. There should be one close to a hospital. I just gave them the prescription and it took maybe 5 minutes.

Hi all - Google breast pump medical suppliers, you can work directly with the supplier. They will check your insurance eligibility and all you'll need to provide is a prescription from your OB. Please keep in mind that you can check a few different medical suppliers if one doesn't have the pump you want. The supplier my insurance company suggested did not offer Medela (which I wanted with DD1), so I called another and got the brand I wanted. (This go around I got a Spectra).

@sorarose if you do this, you can buy new flanges and bottles, the milk doesn't go into the tubing with the PISA so the only thing you'd really want to buy new are the pieces that touch your body. I get being weirded out by buying one from someone you don't know, though. Maybe you can go the BST route on FB and see if there's a local person getting rid of theirs?
I called my insurance and they sent me a list of places to go. It has to be a medical supply store, so usually it's not just your typical drug store. There are online places too.
Vent: I just went to order my breast pump, only to find out my insurance does not cover one. I work for a top tier university. I am baffled that our insurance plans don't cover breast pumps.

Do they cover a rental? I have heard of some insurances covering rental fees instead of purchases.
@26pointrunningfor2 did you check your insurance policy or just try to order online? Some plans require you to order from a specific site or vendor. If that's the case, that sucks! Amazon had a decent price for the Spectra S2 last time I checked, if it's any consolation (it's not, insurance is the actual worst).
Sadly I called, and they said my policy doesn't cover breast pumps. I thought ACA had mandated it-- I may try to fight it if I have the energy. Otherwise, that Spectra S2 is the way I'll go. @lolonvive you're right, insurance is the actual worst!!

This is true for mine, they only work with specific companies.
Not trying to hijack but i have a related question!!
I have United Healthcare and they told me to go to either Byram or Edgepark. From reading on here i'll probably go with Edgepark and go for the Medela pump in Style Advanced, but they only offer the starter pack. This is a copied description from the website: Pump In Style® Advanced Breastpump Starter Set . 2 Phase Expression and fully adjustable. Includes: Motor bag only, 2 Breastmilk Containers. Removable cooler and ice pack not included. Battery pack not included.
So i guess i'll order and pay for the other necessary items separately since the motor is the main big cost anyway. It looks like i'll need a Tote, cooler/ice pack and battery pack. Would there be any other "required" accessories i might need to look into?? Edited to ask that on the Edgepark website they have some of these accessories. I should probably just call but wanted to ask if anyone knew if they could include those items in the cart and it all be covered?

Accessories are not usually covered. I had added a bag and some other stuff to my edgepark cart and when I found out they weren't covered, I cancelled them. It was cheaper to buy these things at Babies R Us with your completion discount or any other coupon. Plus they have the same pump on sale right now. DH is considering buying it so we have an extra. We got a letter/bill in the mail saying that our insurance doesn't cover the pump, but edgepark already sent it to me, after confirming that yes, my insurance DOES cover it. So we aren't paying the bill until we get further notice that insurance won't pay it.
@StayingFocused I am also ordering on Edgepark and I have Oxford, but I'm hopefully getting the Spectra.
The Edgepark customer service is pretty helpful but basically anything additional you add to your cart I believe you pay for, depending on your plan and what it defines as equipment. With the stuff they send you in the starter pack you'll be able to use it out of the box but buy accessories like a bag or cooler. Other things they have on Edgepark are extra containers and/or collection bags, which, if they aren't covered, you might get better prices for online. You also dont HAVE to use the medela cooler bag and ice packs, I'm sure there are similar items on Amazon.
If you can't get a prescription or aren't thrilled with what you get, someone in another thread tipped me off to a groupon for a Spectra S2, which I promptly ordered (with an additional coupon). So excited!
