White noise

Does anyone use white noise to help baby sleep? My little man is not getting enough sleep (been awake for 5 hours now after a 30 minute nap. Before that he was up for 3 hours).

If you use white noise, did you buy a machine? Use the radio? Does it help with your lo?

Re: White noise

  • There are tons of white noise apps for smartphones but E hates them all. She lives John Legend and any music from the 60s, so I'm playing Pandora pretty much 24/7.
  • Loading the player...
  • I dabble with white noise but I'm not sure how effective it is for my LO with regards to sleep. I downloaded some free apps on an iPad. If you go this route, make sure it's an app that works in the background (Relax M. does) otherwise the white noise stops when another app is launched.

  • In desperate situations we put LO in her RnP in the kitchen and turn on the exhaust fan.  She loves the noise and it usually puts her right to sleep.  We have started using a white noise app in her nursery at night.  Not sure how much she likes it but I think it helps.
  • We have a homedics sound machine in each of our kids' rooms. My first was a super light sleeper ad it helped a ton.

We have a sound machine too and LO seems to like the heart beat option.
  • My mom loves using white noise with my nephew. I don't like the idea of training my kid to only sleep if there is a noise in the background.
  • We have the fan on usually for DH so I guess he gets white noise at night. Nothing during naps though. I don't think he minds either way.
  • We have a white noise machine in our master bedroom, but it's more for me so that I can drown out DH and DS's snoring symphony! I slept in the nursery with DS last night (without the sound machine) and I was amazed at all the little night sounds that would wake me up! We live in the country so I kept hearing owls and coyotes all night, haha!
  • Lurking from May- I found white noise to be super helpful with my first child. He didn't actually seem to need it in the beginning, it was more for me initially because we were room-sharing and his noises drove me crazy. But the great thing is, since we used it every night & nap, it became a very powerful sleep cue for him. He's 2.5 and he will still fall asleep virtually anywhere as soon as you turn on the white noise. I know people always say they don't want to "train" their kids to fall asleep only with white noise, or only in dark rooms, but sleep cues are really effective and in my opinion have only made things easier for us.

We do this for his naps during the day. At night, I leave on the fan in the bathroom and we also have the noise from our bedroom ceiling fan. I am definitely one who can't sleep without white noise; silence while sleeping drives me nuts. So I guess it's really more for me than my son. LOL.
