Zantect gives false positives???

So I'm currently 36w and 3d pregnant. I've started taking Zantac for the past week because I have severe heart burn that makes me want to puke. While googling the safety of it (even though my OB said it was safe I still like to make sure because I take 2 extra strength OTC Zantec) I came across a story saying the tested positive for Methamphetinines. I googled if Zantec could cause a false positive and some women actually got their children taken away because of it. And it's actually a common thing. Like how a poppy seed bagel can create a false positive for opiates.
My reasearch is making me scared to take it. It's the only thing that has helped me get any rest at night but I rather deal with heart burn till LO arrives then test positive for a drug I have never even seen other then on tv.
Have any mommas ever heard of this or have experience with this???

  • I haven't heard of this but they would have to have reason to test you for drugs in the first place. There are so so so many women who take Zantac for their entire pregnancy with no issues. Just take it. Don't suffer through it.

Also so poppy seeds don't give a false positive, they give a positive because they do contain opiates in small amounts!

In my state everyone who has insurance gets drug tested during labor and delivery which is why I'm so scared. :(
  • Wow! I have never heard of that. Either the drug testing or the false positive. Good luck either way.

Huh? Why are you worried about this?

In New York they test everyone under insurance. The baby's first poo and the mothers urine.
I have googled it and numerous things I've pulled up says it gives you a false positive.
I don't want them saying I'm an unfit mother because I take Zantec!
Ive read many stories of women even getting their children taken away just because they had tested positive. Just for taking Zantec.
I rather suffer then getting a positive drug test for something that I never associated with in my life.
  • Considering how often I took Zantac, I have a hard time believing this! I had been taking it daily for months when I had my last drug test, and all was fine for me. @ayeshaohara assured many of us it is the best heartburn remedy, so maybe she has insight?

She was the first one to respond. @bray1214 if this is true than ALOT of us are screwed. I think it's also a problem that you're trusting Google over the advice of your doctor.

Heres a list of drugs that cause false positives. Zantec is on the list which has me nervous.

Yes...possible.  But exceedingly rare.  You could also get a false positive having taken no medications at all...also incredibly unlikely, but possible.  I would be willing to take Zantac before a drug test.

    June 2016 pharmacist here!

I actually had to do a presentation on false positive drug screens in pharmacy school.  While it is possible for false positives due to multiple non-illicit substances, it is super super super unlikely.  Here is why you shouldn't worry:

    1. The baby would not show symptoms of amphetamines or withdrawal, nor would you, so it is unlikely they would give you a drug test in the first place.
    2.  If you ever DID test positive for a substance you didn't take, it would be on the preliminary, nonspecific type of drug screen.  If you wanted to dispute the results, you could request the more specific type of test (which would use the same samples as the first test) that can actually distinguish chemical entities from one another. It would be impossible for Zantac (ranitidine) or any other substance to produce a false positive on the more specific type of test.

Bottom line: if Zantac is the only thing you are taking, there is no reason to fear a drug test.  Worst case scenario, an unlikely false positive could be resolved very quickly.
This is what I needed. Thank you. (:
They test every one in my state. So it just made me nervous is all. I even saw on some other baby boards that it happens. I didn't know they would do or could do a more specific test.
  • I'm young. Only 19 and a FTM so I'm edge about everything. When I came across this I freaked out. Thank you for putting my mind at ease.!
  • I find it strange that the OP has only been on TB for like 2-3 weeks and trusts a group of random women/men and google to have better insight than your OB.

But if you're being real, I really wouldn't worry about it....unless you are on meth.

    EDIT

And actually ive been a member since last April but I suffered a miscarriage in May. Got pregnant again in September so I kept the same profile.

  • And I just changed OBs because I moved He's not very nice and I don't ask him a lot of questions. I can even get a third trimester sanogram for positioning because he said my pregnancy has been normal and it's not necessary.

Sorry about your miscarriage. I just didn't recognize your name and it would suck if someone started to troll on our BMB because we are all in the last stretch of pregnancy and giving birth. Many of our mamas are using Zantec and don't need added stress. I'm not a Dr. or pharmacist but it would seem like the hospital would have a list of your medications that you are on and if for some reason you're the rare case that it came up positive, they would be able to make the connection. I really wouldn't worry about it though. Good luck in your last month of pregnancy.

No problem. I completely understand. If I could just figure how how to upload a Profile picture I would. Lol
thank you and I wish you the best with yours as well! I just started taking it so the doctors gonna have to add it to my file so the hospital has it.
  • As a child protective worker, I can say that there has to be other factors than just that. The doctors would be asking you questions if anything came up positive and if your ob knows you're taking that and it came up the they wouldn't call in a report because they know you were taking Zantac.
