Just FYI, I've heard decent things about those car seat covers, but I would avoid the slings -- I don't think they're especially safe and are very cheaply made. There are about 5 companies that are all related that give away "free" or "discounted" stuff to pregnant women, with exorbitant shipping. Most of the products are worth about the cost of the shipping, definitely not "$50". But...I got nursing pads from a sister company for "free" and they worked for me.

@shevaCC Thanks for the heads up! I thought those ads looked pretty similar. That particular canopy came highly recommended to me from a mom-friend and their reviews looked good. I was skeptical about the wrap though, hence the boba.

I got the carseat canopy as a gift for a friend last year and it was really cute! I recently ordered one for myself as well.

Also, stumbled across this website today. It shows a bunch of the best deals in major chain stores. To shove semi unsolicited advice down y'alls throats, one thing I wish I knew with my first baby was to join local Facebook buy/sell/trade groups (b/s/t for search terms)- specifically for Moms. It is super easy to search, go from one group to another to see sister pages and look at the amount of members they have, how active the listings are.

I scored some serious deals on jumpers, playhouses, toys, nursery furniture is a BIG score, sized up baby clothing lots, baby shoes, etc. FTMs spend a lot of money and then outgrow things very fast, or they inherit a lot but kids are picky so they want to sell for cheap. It's also handy later on when you want to sell your own stuff if you aren't having another baby.

To say the obvious, try to meet someone in a public space like a grocery parking lot (get your husband to meet them) or a lot of local police stations have created safe spaces in which to make these swaps, camera monitored or recorded as well. I do not recommend giving anyone your address. Had to be said.

I second your advice @HomeyDontPlayThat.
I can count on one hand the baby items we have that weren't gifted or purchased used. My local FB tot swap is a gold mine of expensive baby gear that I'm too cheap (thrifty?) to buy new. Also, there's nothing more frustrating than buying some fancy peice of equipment that baby ends up eschewing.

I love Once Upon a Child (consignment store)...I've found so much great gently used baby gear for my parents house, toys for DS and clothes for DS...they have awesome brands like Baby Gap for like $3 a sweater instead of $30, some things look brand new!

Also follow Babycheapskates.com and their page on Facebook for a summary of all the baby/kid sales currently going on...I've gotten some awesome deals on car seats based on their tip off!

One word of caution on buying baby stuff online though - my bff bought a used crib online that had good pics and seemed decent, but upon closer inspection some of the wood was wet/rotting ...probably last baby had some accidents and the sellers didn't clean properly.. buyers beware.

I think the general advice is to not buy (or inherit) used cribs or car seats due to the massive amount of recalls and constant changes in standards. Is that correct?

Yes. This is one of many items you should t buy second hand. Cribs and car seats are the big ones.

I'm all for buying things, but when SIL passed me her 2 year old PBK crib that the baby never slept in cause they still co-sleep, I used the model number and checked the recalls- then celebrated not having to spend money on a crib! But family is different than buying used from a stranger.

You can get used car seats and cribs from friends and family. Just as long as you know the history of the items (especially car seats) from people you trust.

Totally bought a used Baby's Dream crib second hand And then resold it once I was done with it.

Most at cribs and car seats have stickers on them that give their details, right? So it's not hard to look them up

I would never buy a used car seat. If the car the car seat was In ever in an accident the integrity of the structure could be compromised. Even if the car seat doesn't look like something happened. That's why if you are in an accident with a car seat in the car insurance will replace the car seat as a loss along with the repair of the car.

I am all for getting things second hand. I got a changing table/with pad and cover for free and a crib/bookshelf for $80. I've also been hitting up rummage sales lately and got great deals on maternity/baby clothes. I got a swing/bouncer combo for $20 and mattress in great shape for $5. I have been eyeing a couple chicco key fit car seats but that may be where I draw the line.

I would t get a car seat or mattress used but just about everything else I buy from consignment or garage sales. I also love the local b/s/t group. Two kids and I think I have bought a handful of brand new clothes. I also use a small dresser as a changing table and when my kids outgrew it, it was still useable in my house.

This honestly depends on your insurance and the adjuster you get. More and more they aren't replacing them. I had to write a sternly worded letter to get mine replaced after my husband hit a deer without our son in the car (unoccupied car seat).

@atcwag that's crazy! Last year when some drunk polish lady T-boned me, her insurance even paid to replace my 800.00 crash proof dog crate! My insurance people explained our dog buisness and how much our dogs cost and they cut us a check for the exact amount of the dog crate.

Yep. I know. Been there, done that. Sometimes it works, often it doesn't. Usually not until you talk to the right person at the right time.

Well it's not all positive. We just moved into our house a year ago. Started TTC and I kept my eye out for deals. I found all the furniture for a steal and then shortly after found out I was pregnant. I lost it in November. After I lost the baby my work gave me 3 days off. H and I decided to get paint and paint the nursery and set up the furniture as sort of closure for that pregnancy.

Just a note on the canopies- only get the canopy. All that other padding and stuff is not safe to put in a car seat as it interferes with its functioning. I was looking around at the site and will probably still get one, but I have a little bit of an issue with buying from a company that specializes in unsafe products.

Yeah I saw that too. Even extra layers of clothes are dangerous for baby. Canopy only! Which is nice because it's cheaper anyway. x)

A few weeks ago I got a Snug a Bunny bouncer for $5 off of a local Facebook Mom swap site, and today I got the matching Rock N Play for $5! Plus, 3 years ago I got the Snug a Bunny swing for free from a mom who was done with it and that makes my grand total for all 3 pieces $10!
